We were lucky to catch up with Nathan Jackson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nathan, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
The pivotal moment in my professional journey occurred when I crossed paths with my mentor. His guidance not only provided me with the chance to transition from a large gym setting to boutique studio coaching but also marked a significant transformation in my coaching abilities. Initially, as a personal trainer, my proficiency in group coaching was underdeveloped. I had no style, my classes lacked structure, and addressing the entire room was a challenge. While I possessed motivating skills naturally, I lacked the knowledge and communication techniques essential for guiding athletes effectively in a group setting.
Upon meeting my mentor, a paradigm shift occurred. I learned to command the room seamlessly, ensuring classes flowed smoothly from start to finish. My mentor played a crucial role in refining my public speaking and communication skills. Additionally, he supported and recommended educational opportunities that precisely matched my coaching skills, resulting in the enhancement of my programming and nutrition expertise as both a coach and athlete. His mentorship became the cornerstone of my growth, marking a turning point in my coaching career.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an ex athlete and football coach turned fitness pro. Following my collegiate athletic journey in 2010, I embarked on a quest to find a new endeavor that ignited the same fervor within me as athletics. The answer revealed itself in the world of fitness and wellness, offering an enduring journey of self-improvement that resonated deeply with me. This discovery not only became my personal pursuit but also fueled a desire to assist others on a similar path.
In 2013, after four seasons as an assistant football coach, I made the decisive move into the fitness industry on a full-time basis. My initial role as an assistant fitness manager at In Shape involved selling training packages and overseeing a team of trainers. However, I soon realized that my joy was in training rather than sales. After just six months on the job, I sought a demotion, transitioning to a full-time trainer role.
Throughout my tenure as a Fitness Coach, I have refined my ability to work with individuals of diverse goals, ages, backgrounds, and body types, recognizing and respecting the uniqueness of each person. My primary focus revolves around cultivating good wellness habits, mastering fundamental body movement, prioritizing posture, and maximizing range of motion. While most clients seek us for 1 on 1 Coaching either in-person or online, I also specialize in Couples Coaching.
What sets me apart from others is my passion for people and building relationships. I am extremely infatuated and knowledgeable about fitness and nutrition but it is my passion for building meaningful connections with people so I can better support them is what set me apart from most. Because I understand the importance of a strong client/coach relationship is crucial for success.
I would say I am most proud of the fact that I have been able to build a strong fitness business in two locations- northern and Southern California that has allowed me to hopefully make a positive impact on the communities I have served. I feel very grateful for the meaningful relationships I have been able to build with some amazing people.
I want others to know that my approach goes beyond the standard fitness regimen. I am looking to empower and toughen your mental state just as much as I’m trying to improve you physically. It will be a team effort and mutual respect will provide the foundation for our success.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation within my market was just getting out there in the community and volunteering my time, teaching free bootcamps, taking classes from other professionals, and being a beacon of health and wellness to my community. Living the fitness lifestyle practicing what I preach has been key.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I’d say the most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been through word of mouth and social media marketing. I feel like through these two avenues,I have been able to generate more organic leads who already have an idea of what I am about coming in which makes the onboarding process easier.
