We were lucky to catch up with Nathan Harvey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nathan, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
Giving hope a helping hand by working hard to get customer satisfaction
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I officially started Nate’s Mounting Services about 3 years ago on my oldest son’s 18th birthday. Initially, I started mounting TVs in hopes that I would give my children, Nate Jr, Natalie, and Josiah Nathan, a powerful and professional legacy to imitate.
I also hoped that this business would somehow help my children, nephews, and nieces avoid the mistakes I made when I was a youth.
When I was younger, I found my way into so much trouble that I eventually ended up incarcerated from age 18 until 26. My excuse to choosing to be a criminal was due to my stepfather/hero committing suicide when I was 10 years old. I remember being young and angry without direction.
By the grace of God, my life was changed while incarcerated.
I must add that the grace of God would eventually lead me out of the criminal lifestyle and way of thinking. Instead of returning to my old ways once out of prison, I started looking for real work. I filled out 75 job applications before finding a job working for a homeless shelter.
The crazy thing is that I initially went to the homeless shelter to get familiar with the place.
I had no job and no place to go, so my caseworker thought he would send me there when I was released from the Halfway house. But instead, I started working for the Shelter, which would eventually help me rent my own place.
My ambition and hard work would help me go from an hourly employee to a manager for the homeless shelter’s thrift stores.
After seven years of working and volunteering for the homeless shelter, I became a truck driver for a short period of time. Then, I became an apprentice for a handyman company. Once learning everything I needed to know to become a professional handyman, I started Nate’s Mounting Services. The rest is history.
Additionally, as a way of giving back to the community I once attempted to destroy as a troubled youth, I also work for a community outreach ministry called Emerald Youth Foundation. My title there is Facilities Coordinator. The building sits exactly where I use to sell drugs at as a troubled youth, which causes me to praise God every morning when I pull up to work.
I also wrote a book series called, “Lost and Found: The Story of an At-Risk Youth.” Before I die, I want to write 10 more books that spread the message of hope and restoration. Besides this, I hope to one day be the #1 TV mounting service in the United States of America.
I also have made a vow to myself to keep my prices affordable and cheaper than competitors.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
By being honest, affordable, and professional helped me in so many ways.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn greed and learn how to put customer satisfaction over time and money.
