We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nathan Guerrero a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nathan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
Do not let people take advantage of you. Before I became a tattoo artist I was an EMT for a private company that works on construction site projects. long story short I was guaranteed a certain position with a certain pay which I did have for a few months then from one day to the next I was cut from that position and forced to take one with a significantly lower pay. so being the person I am, I said screw it and didn’t show up to work the next day. I was getting blown up with phone calls and text messages all while I was sleeping in peaefully without letting anyone disturb my peace. so this has helped me as an artist and entrepreneur because It taught me not to let anyone take advantage of you. companies are so quick to terminate you from one day to the next yet they require you to put in a two week notice? make that make sense. lol in all my jobs I’ve had prior to becoming an artist I’ve never once put a two weeks notice. its a scam. so my advice to you is get up from that miserable job and do what you want to do!
Nathan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the tattoo industry after doing a lot of soul searching with a little help from my sister she was the one who purchased a tattoo machine but quickly realized she can’t handle blood and needles. so as she was tattooing me she couldn’t finish so I grabbed the machine and finished it myself. as soon as I touched the needle to skin something sparked as if my third eye was opened and I knew this was my path. I started practicing on myself and giving friends shitty tattoos when an old friend of mine that’s been tattooing for over 10 years reached out to me and told Me I had potential and offered me an apprenticeship. its been a journey since! I think what sets me apart from others is the vibe and setting I provide for my clients. my goal in life is to provide happiness and spiritual healing through my art and tattooing. one of the biggest compliments I receive is the good energy people feel when they are in my studio and how comfortable I make the whole process. So if you are looking to get tattooed in the Phoenix, AZ area HMU!!!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect is being the person my clients trust with not only their skin but with what’s going on in their lives. a lot of people use tattooing as a form of therapy so if I an influence one person that’s the best feeling ever. also being able to work and not work whenever I want. the freedom to be with my family whenever I want is unbeatable.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
This is going to be very controversial but idgaf lol . I thing NFTs are a scam. point blank period. I think art that is worth the amount of money that nfts are being sold at should be a tangible item like the Mona Lisa. nfts imo are a fake make belief world that all the whales of the world created as another way to make money off of us just like crypto is. you know they all get together and talk about which ones they want to blow up (ethereum, apes nfts) and influence the world to invest and make them super rich and then pull all their money out all at the same time leaving everyone else broke af.
