We were lucky to catch up with Nathan Bucher recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nathan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
It all kinda came together from the circumstances that led to me opening on my own I knew I wanted to create a something I could market and sell
I brainstormed a few names with emblems/mascots and it all just felt right to do an octopus
There were thoughts of a phoenix withe the whole rising from the ashes… but I’m not warm or a bird like that
I am drawn to cool and water
Something just came together with the octopus
I’m one to adapt and do what I must to survive. Unique. Strange. Something almost not belonging to this planet.
I look to travel and be mobile
Spot of Ink is what I settled with because i can go anywhere to perform my craft. I just need a little space,…or a spot, if you will, to do it.
Nathan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My story is somewhat sad. I have a brother who owns a very successful shop. Basically I came into it all under the premise of family. Long story short is I spent roughly 7 years honing my craft and busting my butt 6 days a week sometimes doing 4 tattoos a day to keep the business running while he was absent and battling his demons
There were several times I tried bringing it to his attention something shady was going on with scheduling
I was alway told I was paranoid and a conspiracy theorist. However it was solidified on two separate occasions where people were in fact stealing my appointments.
People were coming in asking for me directly, but we’re being told there was no availability (despite me posting availability) then getting scheduled In another artist’s book
I brought the evidence up to my brother boss and instead of taking my side on things; he took my back in a choke hold.
It was said he was tired of my whiney ass little bitch attitude then put me in a rear naked choke then thrown to the ground and mounted. He refrained from striking me but spit on me instead
All this as if I did something wrong because I stood my ground the entire situation was f-cked
So I was forced out of everything and had to open a studio of my own within two months with absolutely zero planning
I’m still trying to rebound from it all
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The DaVinci in me records almost everything I do Because of this, I have years worth of work not only as a sort of resume, but it allows me to compare fresh tattoos to healed
Pretty much every day starts with me doing social media stories giving me a timeline of work back to 2016 when I was in my first or second year
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
It used to be preached to me “it’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission” I don’t agree with deceiving people
One thing I strive to do is sell with honesty and you’ll hear me say I shoot from the hip
I would rather disappoint someone with a realistic, honest answer over fabricating some illusion that disappoints after the fact
