We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nathan Brooks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nathan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
So my first dollar earned as a creative was 5 years ago. I had just started Rebel Bred and had some t-shirts printed up for a photoshoot to market the brand on social media and online. I rounded some models up and during the photoshoot all of the models loved the clothing and some of the models asked to put in an order after the shoot. That continued on for months. At the same time, I began to advertise Rebel Bred at the bank I was working and started organizing two launch parties. I felt amazed, first that people really like the creation and second they were willing to pay me for my creation.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
So my name is Nathan Brooks (pronounced Nah thon) I am from just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the Mon Valley region. I got into the fashion industry a little over 5 years ago. I was inspired growing up by designers like Ralph Lauren but I never believed I had the artistic ability to become a designer. I decided to go for it one day and came up with a logo and brand name. My intentions were to educate, uplift, and inspire others to chase their dreams and find their life’s purpose. I found purpose through starting up Rebel Bred. I design clothing for women, kids, and men. After starting up Rebel Bred I started jumping into pop up shops and eventually received invites to fashion shows. Rebel Bred solves the problem of having meaningful black owned clothing you can wear proudly. It is fashion with a purpose. The brands dares our audience to be their unique self and reach for higher heights. I am most proud of being named entrepreneur of the year by Styles Week Pittsburgh but more importantly representing the clothing industry with spiritual and fashionable garments. I want clients to know that Rebel Bred is for your motivation through life and you can wear our clothing with pride and honor.

: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
What is driving my creative journey is the purpose of instilling foundational principles back into society such as keeping God 1st, treating others with respect, helping out your neighbor, being honorable and trustworthy. After this year I really learned the importance of faith in yourself and believing that we can accomplish the impossible if we have the faith.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
This year I took on the task of owning a brick and mortar store. Although, it was a great experience the location wasn’t right and it’s time to move onto the next phase. I learned so much over the process of this year, I know now where I can take Rebel Bred from this point. The lessons you learn along your journey will transform you into a better person all around.
