We were lucky to catch up with Nathan B Phillips recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nathan B, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I think from a very young age I definitely knew that my hand would be fused to some sort of artistic medium,
At first I went down the path of a draftsman working for Architects, Engineers, kitchen designers and even worked for a Tyre and Exhaust Company partnered with Continental Tires.
But this all got old very quickly, and a recession didn’t help either.
The moment I stepped into the tattoo studio, the one where I would take a leap of faith, and put it all on the table, I knew it was where I was destined to be and destined to make my mark!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As I mentioned before, I started in a mall flash orientated studio in the heart of Pretoria, South Africa,
I quickly finished my apprenticeship and started working on the craft. Working 7 days a week from 9:00-21:00, doing piercing and custom designs for the other artists for an extra buck on the side.
This carried on for about two years before moving to a bigger studios and to bigger better things over the last 15 years.
I specialize in Neo-Realism and a hint of surrealism, with a splash of color every now and then when the need arises. You can see more of my work on instagram @nathanphillips_art & @np_art_official.
I love bringing in personalized symbolism into each and every art piece I create, specific to each clients needs and wants.
I think what sets me apart from the rest is my true interest in my clients and what they want on their bodies.
Its taken me quite a few years but I think I’m honing into a style that I feel comfortable and confident in and that my clients feel proud to wear.
Me and my partner/fiancé use to own Humdinger Emporium Tattoos, which we recently sold to focus on our new lives in the USA.
We recently moved to the United States of America, seeking a better and safer place to start a family and have a better quality of life Im super proud of my partner taking the big leap of faith with me and taking the world on by the horns, together!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
To be honest it must be the sheer joy, or is it the cloak of pride the clients get to wear? Or is it the liberation they experience by getting a piece of art on their bodies, I don’t know, but what I do know is that it all makes what we do so much more worth it!
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I think it has its place, some NFTs are being done right with the right incentives and dividends, but most are people trying to take the piss out of a market that proved itself over and over again if I can use the Yacht Apes NFTs.
Yes it spiked astronomical, but eventually did plateau out, they did it right by creating a networking platform for people who would by any other means not necessarily get to network or even meet.
But thats just my point of view.
