We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nathalie Toomey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nathalie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My parents did many things right, but what stands out most is their embodiment of resilience, generosity, and family values. As immigrants from Cuba they faced significant challenges yet remained determined to take a chance on their dreams of making better lives for themselves and their families. My father had an entrepreneurial spirit and transformed obstacles into opportunities constantly pivoting throughout his career. Despite facing many challenges as an immigrant, my father remained one of the funniest, happiest, and warmest people I know. He exuded generosity, and an unwavering optimism. He showed me success isn’t just about personal achievement but also about uplifting others along the way. My mother stayed at home nurturing her children and instilled in us the importance of dedication and commitment to others. My parents journey as a couple is a testament to the power of perseverance and pursuit of the American Dream.
These lessons have had a profound impact on my life and career. They have shaped my approach to business, where I prioritize relationships, craftiness, and resilience. In every challenge, I draw on my parents’ example, knowing that with determination and optimism, I can navigate any obstacle.

As a passionate entrepreneur, I have launched two businesses that reflect my commitment to my community. My first venture is as a speech language pathologist dedicated to helping individuals with communication disorders. I strive to build a supportive environment for my clients where they are able to flourish and thrive. Getting the opportunity to serve a population of individuals with unique needs and be an advocate to ensure they are supported is why I love the work that I do.
Additionally, I have founded a woman-owned minority company that provides direct-to-consumer delivery services. This venture leverages my skills in organization, reliability, and efficiency. I am proud to be carving out a space in a field that traditionally lacks diversity. I am committed to empower other women and minorities to pursue their ambitions in fields where they may be underrepresented.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Becoming a new mom and losing a pillar in my life, my father, suddenly to cancer within a short span of time were two life-altering experiences that reshaped my perspective on life and my career. As I navigated a new identity as a mom alongside the unexpected loss of my father brought on immense grief but also a profound clarify on what truly matters. His passing was a stark reminder that life is unpredictable and the dreams we have towards building the life we want should not be postponed. My father was the embodiment of resilience, kindness and entrepreneurial spirit-qualities that guided him from humble beginnings to becoming a successful entrepreneur. In mid-2024, I decided to focus on creating ventures that aligned with my new life as a mom, and aspirations for my future. As I reflect on my father’s legacy and the profound impact he had on my life, I am filled with a deep desire for my son to look up to me in the same way. Ultimately I want my son to know that he can carve his own path towards creating the life of his dreams, whatever that may be fueled by the legacy of those who came before him and the dreams he dares to pursue. Life experience has taught me that challenges can be a powerful catalyst for change, pushing us to pursue our dreams.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe what has made me reputable not only in speech therapy but also with my direct-to-consumer delivery company, She Ships, is my customer-centric approach in both ventures. Listening to my clients has allowed me to tailor my services to meet their unique needs. By prioritizing openness and transparency in all aspects of both businesses, I have created a foundation of trust with clients which I believe is a basis to my success.
