Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nathalie Martinez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nathalie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
Well, I always baked when I was younger. When I really was craving some brownies (my favorite). I left that alone until Covid hit and I realized I wanted to do something for myself. My sister n law was the one who pitched the idea to me really. So, I thought about it and I told my husband what I wanted to do. Next thing you know, he ordered me a mixer and got it within the next few days. It took me some trial and error to perfect my craft, practice makes perfect. It didn’t take me long either to get a clientele. There were struggles, tears, money over spent. Times I wanted to give up, but my motivation are my kids. They keep me going with their words of encouragement and my little taste testers.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a home based baker. I started my business during Covid, when all the local shops closed and everyone was looking for treats for their small parties. I make cupcakes, sugar cookies, number/letter cakes, cake pushpops and jumbo smash cupcake. Starting my business, really showed me my potential for decorating. I love when clients give me free range for their treats. They give me the colors or them they are wanting and I just let my little heart go for what it seeks. My clients always appreciate me for my great work by referring me to their friends. Word of mouth goes a long way for me.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have a full time job as an Insurance Agent and when Covid hit we transitioned to working from home. We all thought it was going to be for just a week or two, but in turned into a few months. At the time, my daughter just turned 2 and my son was 7. So, I was working full time from home with a 2 year old and my 7yr old was doing school remotely. That was definitely an experience being mom and a worker at the same time. After, things started opening back up with restrictions, my husband and I decided it was best for me to stay working from home and taking care of my daughter and my so.n still remotely for school. It was an adjustment for me but now my boss allowed me to stay home still working but part time since I have another little one..
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I have created an Instagram, Facebook and Tiktok separately for my business. I post on social media and then repost from my personal page as well. My friends and family aswell repost for me to get in touch with their friends. I posy my business on Facebook marketplace and that has been my main source for new clients. I have friends who also are bakers but they do not make what I make so we refer eachother to those clients. I also will pass out my cards whenever I’m out running errands.
