We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Natha Perkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Natha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.

I was 18 and, in a relationship. I didn’t like who I had become in this partnership- I was argumentative, my feelings were hurt easily, and I was unreasonable. I would slam the door on my way out and just leave mid conversation.

In this moment of clarity, I realized I didn’t want to be this way. I hated being at the mercy of my emotions, and I made a conscious decision to change. I spent the next 15 years trying out different versions of therapy, spiritual work, and self-exploration. In my mid 30s, I had another “spiritual awakening” and realized that to be content- to reach and maintain some level of emotional satisfaction- I needed to address my old insecurities and longings on a deeper level.

That’s right about the time that I got certified as a life coach and began to work with other people. I discovered astrology within that timeframe, but I didn’t start learning it until a few years later. I knew on some level that one of the things that I was meant to do on this planet involves helping other people learn more about themselves.

Studying oneself has a profound impact on everything. It can improve the quality of your relationships, your physical wellness, your emotional reactivity, your career choices etc. Knowing your needs, desires, habits, blindspots and gifts is a superpower. You would think most people would have the answers to all of the above, but most are only familiar with superficial layers of their “personality”. I’ve worked my way to the point where I now get to fulfill my mission- I help others understand themselves but I had to learn to understand myself first.

Natha , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I’m an astrological teacher and guide: I help people understand what their life is about; how to use their experiences as tools for growth and ultimately- how to find contentment and satisfaction.

If you’re emotionally sensitive (as most of us are), astrology can explain why and what to do about it. If you’re an overachiever, a people pleaser or your nervous system gets easily riled up, astrology gives insight into how you can ditch the difficult parts of those tendencies and grow the gifts within them.

Most of us have difficult emotions and repetitious thoughts that are extremely uncomfortable, we know something needs to change, but we don’t know how to do that. In an astrology reading, I uncover how you can make those changes. For example, if you’re bored with your job, you may be considering a new career, but underneath that- what’s the boredom about? Do you feel unappreciated? Does your workplace have an exhausting company culture? Are you not stepping into your full potential? The boredom shows up to get your attention.

In a private astrology reading, we find the meaning for the discomfort in your life by uncovering the questions and the underlying issues, and of course finding the solutions.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?

In terms of generating clientele- I put myself out there. I wrote astrology articles and published them, I pitched podcasts and landed interviews, I developed an Instagram presence and I collaborated with other practitioners. The number one way I generate business is through word of mouth, but to get word of mouth clients, I need people through the door in the first place!

In the beginning, I offered free readings to people in the community that I knew would recommend me if they enjoyed their reading. Those first people sent many paid clients my way. I’ve also done podcast interviews which gave me great practice of “speaking from the stage”. Not all those interviews were big client generators, but a few have translated into consistent new clients over the years. That’s hundreds of clients from one or two interviews.

I have people in my apprenticeship program who are learning to build an astrology business. Right away I give them homework and instructions for how to start making a name for themselves. I know people are shy, and that showing your face and sharing your viewpoint on social media can be a very intimidating thing, but it pays off. It’s the way business works right now- a business needs an online presence for credibility. Have you ever searched a business online, realized they have no social media, or it was outdated? What did that make you think about the business?

Buyers want to purchase from people they trust and showing up consistently in visible ways that prove your expertise will draw customers to you.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

I started my business with zero clients and now I work with 30 + students and clients a month. One of the best decisions I ever made was hiring a business coach. I realized that in order to become a successful astrologer, I had to hone my craft but I also needed to know how to generate clients and run a business.

I didn’t really know how to do that part and I knew it was possible but my astrological studies weren’t teaching me how to actually make money. I found a business coach (Sarah M. Chappell) and have worked with her in various capacities for the last five years. She helped me find my niche, gave me the confidence to raise my prices and shared the wisdom of having high ticket offerings as a compliment to one-off readings. She has been my cheerleader, but more than that- she helped me understand that I could run my business in the way that worked for my nervous system; that I didn’t need to follow “successful business rules” if they didn’t support me. Just because other businesses had 6 social media accounts, didn’t mean I had to. Here I am in my sixth year of business, and I’ve worked with thousands of clients.
