We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nate The Great a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nate, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Consistency in practicing the art form of rapping and doing a lot of studying on my favorite artists and how they mastered their abilities. To be quite honest, I don’t think anything would have been done to speed up the process because everyone moves at their pace. Freestyling & flow are my main essential due to experimenting with different rhythms while staying on beat. The only obstacle that stood in my way was my self doubt and my shyness at the time.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well to start off my name is Naquan Brown, I also go by my stage name Nate the Great! I’m from Far Rockaway, Queens, New York I just recently turned 25 and I have been rapping and creating music for 10 years now. How I got into music was I was a massive book worm growing up and I would write poetry back in middle school. As time went on around 2014, it manifested into songwriting and when I started recording. Wasn’t the best when I started out but overtime you gradually becoming more improved than how you begun. What sets me apart from the rest is not only my dedication and passion to Hip-Hop but also my work ethic. There were many times when I was feeling under the weather or even dealing with personal losses I still showed up and performed on stage with everything I have. I would be up late during school nights and be doing writing exercises until 5 to 6 in the morning when the sun rises. I’m most proud of the fact that I been in the culture of Hip-Hop for this long and I will continue to be apart of it for as long as I live. To any potential new fans or followers who discover me, just know once you tune into my music, you’re getting full blown lyricism with unique production including a whole bunch of pop culture references to either video games, anime, wrestling and literature etc.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Connecting with the audience. Whenever I perform or have listeners hear my music, I can feel them in a sense and there are times where I get messages from my supporters and they’re like “this song is amazing.” or “this project is something remarkable.” That’s what keeps me going.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Consistent posting of freestyles on Instagram, joining talent shows on there and TikTok, posting snippets of unreleased content and also collaborations with other creatives. The best advice I can give is understand and know your target audience and who your demographic is.
