Hi Nate, thanks for joining us today. Talk to us about building your team? What was it like? What were some of the key challenges and what was your process like?
In the early stages of my business, I collaborated closely with my father during the initial year. I actively networked and sought out experienced mentors in every aspect relevant to my company’s operations. Surrounding yourself with individuals who possess greater knowledge is crucial; they provide invaluable insights and save both time and money by offering guidance when you encounter unfamiliar challenges. Remember that ignorance can be costly. It’s essential to observe how these mentors handle their clients in terms of customer service, presentation, and work quality. Everyone involved in a project reflects upon your business, and you bear ultimate responsibility for delivering top-notch results to clients. So, be selective when choosing collaborators; their impact on your growth is significant.
I was fortunate to be mentored by this group of men and women, and I had the humility to seek their advice and listen. You don’t have to agree with everything they say, as your vision is unique, but be wise and heed valuable advice. This approach saved me a considerable amount of time and accelerated my journey towards productivity and profitability. This was particularly crucial when we were striving to establish a consistent client base and break into larger projects. After the first year, I ventured out on my own, eventually assembling a team of three members including myself . I was determined to ensure that our customers received high-quality work, and I compensated every team member involved with making my vision come to life along that year I had to learn to be out front and tap into my social skills it stretched me in ways I otherwise would have never grown in remember to enjoy the journey take the losses and wins in stride the number one things is keep going you will get there.
The initial phase was marked by many challenges, we did a lot of work for free. While we began to build traction & clientele. Our team members remained steadfast, believing in the vision I can be a testament the sacrifices add up And they don’t just come back they compound if you want to succeed learn then principle of delayed gratification. Pay it forward and go the extra mile if possible. As far as your team goes people tend to give their all when they have a Leader who sets the bar high and Leads by example sitting there with your hands folded and shouting out orders may work for some but in my experience coaching and using yourself as the standard you want to see has been ideal in building a strong team. Learning people management skills and handling diverse personalities is vital as you progress. Ensuring the well-being and recognition of dependable team members leads to increased productivity and higher-quality work. Cultivating a culture of pride is key to long-term success.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Is a Black owned construction company based in Houston,Texas founded in 2020 during the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, my father and I ventured into a business partnership. Despite lacking any relevant experience in construction, I assumed the white collar side of operations all while learning the ins and out from my father and other mentors . Starting our own business was a big risk , one I could have easily failed at I’ve had many chances to give up.
That first year was filled with highs and lows, marked by numerous stressful days. Let me give you some honest advice. In the year leading up to our business launch, I immersed myself in learning about business operations and financial literacy. I dedicated countless hours to consuming content on these topics, devouring books, and studying the paths of successful entrepreneurs who built their empires. During this period, I collaborated with a friend’s father on several projects and discovered my passion for the trade. The satisfaction of turning people’s visions into reality and the newfound financial independence it provided me fueled my desire to excel. I aimed to provide for myself and my family, irrespective of traditional employment, and I yearned for recognition and growth.
I didnt want to be stuck in 9-5 routine. My ambitions have always been the source from where fire has burned , driven by a deep-seated belief that I was destined for more. Any advice for managing a team?
If you’ve ever been part of a team sport, you’ll understand principle that no one person is above the team. Everyone plays a role, regardless of its size, and we all collaborate towards a shared objective. When you’re in a leadership position, it’s crucial to keep this principle in mind.
I believe that actively participating alongside your team establishes a positive work environment. It’s essential to approach leadership with both empathy and the ability to gauge when and how to motivate for increased productivity. Recognize that every individual is unique, and honing good social skills while setting an example won’t eliminate challenges, but it will instill confidence in your team, knowing they have a capable leader to follow. Always hold yourself accountable and set the tone the standard starts with you.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Promote like your life depends on it because it does ! Shake numerous hands and distribute your business cards. Post on Social Media and use your friends with bigger followings to catch new looks .Always ask because opportunities can slip away swiftly. Stay prepared and act swiftly, never letting a chance to network pass you by. I recall reading a book by the businessman and entertainer Curtis Jackson, famously known as 50 Cent. In it, he emphasized the significance of “raising your hand”which simply means finding ways to be of value to the people you want to be in business with, make yourself useful to your network allow yourself to be used but make sure your mutually benefiting.
Constantly putting yourself out there, networking, grabbing attention, and engaging people. Equally important is discovering unique ways to be of service to others and ensuring that they always remember who you are, what you do, and that you present yourself in a manner that reflects your expertise.
