We recently connected with Nate McDuffie Jr and have shared our conversation below.
Nate, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
As a musician and music producer, I was able to educate myself on both crafts. I have been playing drums since I was four years old. Producing came into play when I was 21 years old.
Practicing a lot more as a kid would have definitely sped up the learning process. I did not understand the importance of practicing when I was younger and also the impact it would have on my career.
Playing the drum set was the most essential skill for me of course. I basically apply my knowledge from the drum set into producing.
I’ve had difficult situations just like anybody else who’s chasing their dreams. Though I made have been slowed down, I never let them stop me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My Dad is a musician, and as a child I took interest in the drums as I grew up. I was able to teach myself how to play after studying and watching other drummers from church. Since then, I’ve played drums from elementary all the way to college. While in college, I came into the craft of producing. It started off me using garage band via iphone. I later transitioned to using Logic X Pro and eventually, to FL Studios.
I offer ‘musical tracks to artists, I produce clothing trailers, and dance choreographies. What sets me apart is my versatility in my music. I am flexible in any genre when it comes to creating.
What I’m most proud of is, I’ve faced many obstacles but I persevered. Anyone else, I encourage to follow your dreams and never compare your journey to others. Everyone’s experience will be different. Just stay focus and strive to be the best you can be.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being creative, is being able to grab different sounds and fusing them together to creating something spectacular.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was not to think so much about being creative. Spending too much time on something can hinder your creative process. There was a time where this one particular track I was working on and I was unable to finish it.
I was thinking so hard about it and trying to make it so perfect. I was told not to spend so much time on something and just do what I was born to do. I later reconstructed the track and was able to create something very special.
