Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nate McClellan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nate, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My whole life I have always been a fan of health and nutrition and would always be reading books about it. But while it was a passion of mine I originally got my degree in electronics engineering. Even while in marathon condition I constantly had restless leg syndrom since my 20’s which I determined was due to inflammation. This discovery lead me to eat healthier and take a deeper look into anti-inflammitory foods. When I found sorghum I was beyond excited about this grain. I started eating it and found the option to pop sorghum and make it similar to popcorn and to have it as a snack. I started searching for the best popping sorghum because not all sorghum pops very well. It took me many trial and error batches to find the sorghum that I use today. Popped Sorghum was not very popular starting out because of many people’s unfamiliarity with sorghum as a grain. It took years and thousands of demos to share the excitement of this popable grain with many health benefits. Sorghum has been popped for thousands of years but has never gained popularity in America. Every day I strive to change this and make it a well know grain.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Nature Nate’s LLC is a small family business that has had a grass root start in the Pacific Northwest. I am extremely proud of the growth in this company within the past 10 years. We make a healthy and delicious snack called Popped Sorghum which is sorghum that is popped in a variety of oils and seasoned with different flavors. We are the only manufacturer in the world that pops their sorghum in oil. Sorghum is in the top 12 non-allergins and is also lectin-free compared to popcorn. I am extremely proud that I am helping change the eating habits of America by introducing people to sorghum. This super grain is packed with nutrients, fiber, and gut-buddy bacteria polyphenols. We hope to make sorghum a commonly known grain to Americans and to make Popped Sorghum a household snack.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Starting this business it was extremely small with low expenses to start out but even with low expenses it did take a lot of money and commitment to start. I leveraged money from my 401K in order to start up which was scary at first but has definitely paid off in the long run. I was able to break even in the second year and sales have grown at an average of 40% per year since then. It’s been a hard journey to get here but things have never looked better.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation in this market was built with a lot of time and effort. In the beginning, it was all about the relationships I could build through demoing the product and networking with other entrepreneurs. Beyond connections, today it is all about customer service and product quality. The basis of our company is to create a snack that is healthy, delicious, and made with top-quality ingredients. Our reputation is built around high-quality customer service as well, with quick response time and helpful responces from my self and my team.
