We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nate Hicks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nate below.
Hi Nate, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
The year was 2016. I’d been singing for about 5 years as this point and had recently begun writing. On one of my frequent visits home from college, I found myself in a makeshift studio, recording original lyrics over a beat from youtube that really spoke to me at the time. Days later I released my first single “Pieces” via Facebook, Youtube, and Soundcloud and the response was so overwhelmingly positive, encouraging me to do more. At that moment, I knew my gift was way bigger than what I was initially aware of and I decided that I’d love nothing more than to write, sing, and perform professionally for the rest of my life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Late middle school/early high school is when I truly began exploring my gifts by singing in church, writing and rapping in the halls at school, and experimenting on instruments every chance that I got. Once I decided to take things to the professional level, it was my main goal to put out consistently great music. As I grew to understand business a bit more, my capacity has expanded greatly, allowing me to embody Nate Hicks as not just an artist, but a brand. My clients, fans and supporters can access my voice with the click of a few buttons, they can request my presence, they can buy my products, they can solicit my advice and expertise. I’m here for the people that need me and I’m grateful that people respect and support what I have going on.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Love drives my creative journey. I was created in the image of Love and I believe that the world needs more of it so I share it every chance I get, oftentimes through my music as well as visually through merchandise. The way that I see it… there will never be enough love, so I’ll always have a purpose.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I’ve come to understand that a lot of people live in fear and a lot of what we fear is what we don’t understand. Non-creatives don’t necessarily understand why I feel called to do things differently as it relates to investments of my time, energy, and finances and depending on the day, I’m overwhelmed with projection from those who gave up on their dreams, those who refuse to dream, and those who simply don’t understand. For years, I’ve sacrificed each of those things in various capacities, at times trading my mental health for extra finances or substituting stability for more time and energy to put towards my craft. I’m still working and refining my processes and allowing God to make it all fall into place, so all I need from you is positivity, encouragement, bookings, purchases, prayers, and support!
