Nate , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
My whole life I have been taking a risk. I was a senior in high school in 2019 and right before my senior year was started I was getting ready to continue playing quarterback, but was told I was not a quarterback by my head football coach in high school. It really hurt me a lot as my whole entire life that’s the position I had been playing so I decided to bet on myself and take a risk. I transferred schools for my senior year, I moved my grandparents to be closer to the new school, and ultimately I took that risk and it paid off.
I went on to win the state championship in football that year with my new school while also beating my old school in the process on my old field. We played the state championship game on the university of Nebraskas field in memorial stadium where my dad played and went to school. I also was rewarded with being the player of the year and many other accolades for football. Then we even went onto win state in basketball as well right before covid hit in March of 2020 but that’s a whole other story. This risk of going to a completely different school, leaving all your childhood friends behind, getting death threats for following your dreams, getting your house and grandparents house egged and teepeed all because I was following my dream.
It lead me down the path I’m on now and I’ve taken so many risks in my life because of how my senior year went . So When I finish my senior season, I didn’t have the scholarship offers I wanted so I took another risk going the jr college route to play football and the risk paid off as I was named national player of the year, a first team All-American, and led my team to a JuCo national championship. That got me a ton of accolades and offers and I ended up committing to Iowa State for football. Then after a hard season, the coaching staff that brought me and got fired so I decided to take another risk and transferred to mcneese State in Louisiana. I was named captain and the starter four months into being there. Ultimately there were a lot of things out of my control that were wrong with the program. We were loosing games, tons of players fighting players, coaches fighting coaches, and A lot of behind the scenes issues from the up above that I knew I could not help or fix it as that was out of my hands.
So I took another risk and left that position to transfer schools again and ended up at Lindenwood university where I’ve been for the last three months. I was named starter two months in and named key leader of the team. We now have our season where we just played the university of Kansas week one in front of a sold out crowd.
So yeah my life has been pretty crazy the last 5 years and a lot of risk taking. But at the end of the day with God on my side I know anything is possible. The marathon continues.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
There are a lot of things about me as I am a small creator who grew up in Omaha, Nebraska being the biggest Nebraska fan. I went to all the games every single Saturday. I knew Football was something that I wanted in my life forever and I knew playing it was just a blessing in itself. When Covid hit, I realize there’s opportunity for me to get into social media for real and so that’s when I started my TikTok account which blew up a lot in Covid and I was on and off being a creator as you would say from time to time but overall, I found a way to connect with a lot of people who are going through the same type of issues and things.
My senior year grabbed a lot of attention with everything I went though and accomplished. Showing these kids it is possible and you can bet on yourself and make it work. I’ve been able to come in contact with over thousands and thousands of people Who are going through maybe not the same thing as me but a very similar story. And that story is kids betting on themselves. being told they’re not good enough. They’re too small. They’re too short. They can’t do it and then realize that they can and overcoming that adversity , I think being a perfect example for them it’s awesome when I get all the messages and I’m able to help or congratulate them and that is something that I take a lot of pride in and especially as I am still playing at the division level right now.
What sent me a part from everyone else as I’m actually going through these trials and tribulations as we speak. it’s everyday process for me with this football life and being the quarterback at the university. It isn’t the easiest and there’s a lot that comes with it, especially when you lose, they look to you and when you win they look to you. But it’s a blessing and a privallege and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I’m very thankful to be in that position as it is a position that I wanted to be in my whole life so I’m not complaining at all about And I thank the man above every single day for blessing me with this opportunity.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I’d say be very careful who you trust. It’s a dirty business in any fashion or lane you pick. Especially in the football business. I think always having your head on a swizzle. Thats something I’ve had to relearn every single football season.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I know it all started from transferring high school. When you are looked at as a traitor or a fraud for just doing what you know is best for your overall future. At the end of the day getting my education paid for and making my parents not have to worry about it was a huge goal for me. And being the quarterback at a college was something I dream of as a kid. So not dealing with all of the terrible things said about me, telling me when I transferred they hope I broke my neck, tore my ACL, glad my dog died. All of these horrible things were said to me. So when I transferred that year it was hard but I give so much credit to my family and my new teammates who brought me in and made me feel welcomed. I was resilient.
I wasn’t going to lose. So we didn’t. Ended up going 13-0 and now ranked the 5th best Nebraska High School football team in the history. I broke school records. Got every accolade you could think of. And at the end of the day what I prayed for came true and I was resilient in not letting what others said about me or did to me define who I was.
