We were lucky to catch up with Nate and Chasity Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.

Nate and Chasity , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?

Yes, we take vacations! We believe it is important to take vacations. We value family time and this is a great way to spend uninterrupted time with our family. Also, we are always working and it’s good to just take a break from constant work to rest and relax. You can get burned constantly working.. You need to have uninterrupted vacations. No emails, phone calls or business matters. Vacations can also allow you to come up with new fresh ideas and reevaluate things.

Nate and Chasity , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Our business started as a hobby. Chasity first started decorating cakes in her high school culinary arts program and really loved it. Years later after having her first daughter Chasity decided to try her hand at making her 4th birthday cake. It turned out better that she thought it would. From there she began making cakes for different events and they became a hit. During that time we got our hands on the family recipe for Charleston Chewies ( our signature item ). Nate began taking treats in the streets and selling after having our second set of twins for more income. Selling treats became extremely successful. So much that Nate was making more than he was in his teaching career and was able to quit for us to pursue the baking business full time. We baked from our home and sold treats in the streets, farmers markets, barber shops and salons and different festivals. We then rented out a kitchen and from the shared kitchen we held a 6 month contract at the Charleston International Airport. We felt that contract was not for us but during our time there we were presented with an opportunity to have the brick and mortar that we are currently at and have been for over 2 years now. In our shop we offer a rotating menu of cookies, cupcakes, cheesecakes, ice cream and pound cake. We offer our famous Charleston Chewies. We make several different items using our Chewies including ice cream, cheesecake and pound cake. We also offer custom cakes and cake decorating classes. When you come into our shop the Charleston Chewie are a must try!
Always trying new items and priding ourselves in customer service and having our kids involved is what sets us apart.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

I believe being consistent in the that we put out and standing behind it helped us build our reputation in our market. Also, having different unique items and having good customer service.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

The best source of new clients for us would be word of mouth, farmers markets/ festivals, and interviews.
