We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Natasha Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Natasha , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
Starting this online business venture was a huge leap for me. I have been in healthcare for almost 20 years and have always had this itch to do things “my way” but not having that business background held me back from trying. Owning a brick and mortar clinic seems so scary so I started an online coaching business where I fused my love of physical fitness and health with my expertise in helping people recover from injury in physical therapy. This new normal of doing things online created a space for me to start a business, without a physical structure while being able to reach those who normally would not have had the opportunity due to geographical location.
Natasha , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Natasha Bacheyie Taylor and I am the owner of Black Star Physical Therapy and Wellness. I created this platform to help women exercise pain free. To teach them how to manage their chronic pain and avoid injury through exercise. I have bridged my love and knowledge of fitness with my years of experience and expertise in injury prevention/recover to create online programs that can be completed on their time with a holistic approach to health. My clients goals include pain management, reducing joint stiffness and managing chronic conditions such as blood pressure, MS and joint hyper mobility.
My mission is to make a difference in someone’s life. I value equality, empowerment and health and my vision is to help women manage their pain so that they don’t feel like they need to use medication, experience mental anguish or use other means to cope. I will promote community health and wellness by providing accessible resources and education especially for members of underserved communities that may not have an advocate or access to health education.
This September I will be in business for 2 years and I am most proud of being able to educate women about the relationships between food, exercise and their health by being invited to speak on various online platforms specifically for community health education.
My followers learn with a little bit of humor tips on injury prevention and nutrition. Follow me to find out!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The story that I had to unlearn was being comfortable in sales and charging what I am worth. I have been in healthcare my entire career and get patients from referral. They pay for services with insurance so I didn’t need to know the background happenings pertaining to profits. When I first started working with private clients, I felt bad charging them the industry price because “I just wanted to help”. I’m used to not collecting money for my devices due to the insurance system in healthcare but that thinking was hurting my business. I wasn’t charging near my worth but yet spending a lot of time with clients questioning if I made the right decision. Thanks to great coaching and really looking at how much time and effort I give to my clients, I started charging my worth and started getting quality, dedicated clients.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I love what I do but if I had to go back, I would have entered the private sector sooner. Yes being a business owner and entrepreneur is hard. I’m currently have one foot in an organization and 1 out because I have a family and my personal need of security outweighs jumping in head first. But the freedom that is there with making decisions that align with my goals and values are unmatched.
