We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Natasha Sewell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Natasha below.
Hi Natasha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
As a family and newborn photographer, motherhood is a big part of my business. I capture motherhood in all the phases – expectant mothers, new moms, toddler moms, seasoned moms…you name it!
I’m also a mother to three grown children and all things motherhood are near and dear to my heart.
I do personal projects on a regular basis in my business – they help me push myself creatively without having the constraints of creating work for clients.
My projects usually have a theme. I’ve done two motherhood projects. The first one was Motherhood Calm and Chaos – I captured motherhood in two frames, one showing the calmness and one showing the chaos. The second project was The Blur of Motherhood – these were black and white images that showed motion blur representing how motherhood feels.
Both projects allowed me to connect with mother and truly see them in their motherhood journey.

Natasha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Natasha Sewell, photographer, educator and owner of NPS Photography based in Washington, DC. I specialize in photographing families in their homes. Parents are busy and I make capturing their family’s unscripted joy not only fun but easy. I do the heavy lifting by helping them every step of the way from wardrobe assistance to help choosing the products to showcase their images.
I am also a photographer educator and mentor providing guidance on everything family photography related to fellow photographers – from the ins and out of their business to photographing clients. Photography is a lonely business and having a mentor is a game changer!
My motto is “real life is picture perfect”.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is comparison is the thief of joy! As a creative and a business owner, it’s easy to go down the rabbit hole of comparison. We are inundated with other people’s work and highlight reel on social media and it can really bring you down. Putting on blinders and focusing on your business and what works for you will not only make you a happier person, but will help make your business thrive.
Once a year, I completely take social media off my phone and really focus in on what matters. It’s how I stay away from self doubt and negativity, which I have certainly found myself in before!

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Connection. We all crave human connection in this digital world. My photography showcases connection within a family and it’s one of the things I love about my work. To stay connected with my clients, I have a newsletter where I don’t sell, sell, sell! It’s a place to share stories and things I currently like – recipes, clothing, books, movies, etc. It’s also a great place to share tips. I get lots of clients who hit reply on my newsletters and the conversation continues via email.
Having a know, like and trust factor with you and your business is so important for brand loyalty and an email list is a great way to foster that!
