We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Natasha Sewell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Natasha, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Personal projects are a big part of my business. They allow me to explore new things and techniques, as well as, be creative without the pressure of producing work for clients. My projects typically center around motherhood.
Motherhood Calm & Chaos
I grew up with a sister – just the two of us. We were girly-girls and very typical “all girl”. Quiet and calm. We loved playing with dolls and reading bedtime stories.
I raised three boys. My house was loud and at times crazy! There was constant movement. Pure chaos.
As a lifestyle photographer that shoots newborns and families in-home, you can say I’ve had a front row seat to motherhood, with ALL of its calm and chaotic moments.
And that has prompted my new project – Motherhood Calm & Chaos. This project features the duality of being a mom in two photographs – one that shows the quiet, calm moments of motherhood and one that shows the crazy chaos that is part of your every day. Because we all know that there is both, sometimes in the same 60 second span!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
In 2013, my three children were in school full-time, and I reached for a camera and never looked back.
Today, as a lifestyle family and newborn photographer serving the Washington, D.C. area. My goal is to capture my clients’ life just as it is–beautiful, joyful, unscripted, and in the most tender of places: your home.
As a mother of three, who are all grown now, I know all too well how fleeting childhood can be! As a professional in-home family and newborn photographer, I treasure the opportunity to capture my clients’ growing family’s special moments.
My favorite images to create are those that reflect my clients’ connection to each other as a family and to design heirloom products that both display & protect your portraits within of their home.
I offer my clients a high touch experience from thee inquiry to the delivery of their products – I’m there to guide and help them along the way.
In 2023, I launched 1:1 mentoring for photographers online and in-person.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My business took a major pivot beginning in 2019. For the first six years of my business, I owned a studio in North Carolina and specialized in posed newborns.
In 2019, my husband retired from the Army and took a job in Washington, DC. Not only did I relocate my business, but I completely pivoted to in-home, lifestyle photography. Renting a studio space in DC wasn’t an option, so this pivot allowed me to continue working with newborns and families.
I have loved this pivot and can’t imagine doing anything else!

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
In-person mentoring and education!
These have been a game changer for me. Being a photographer and an entrepreneur can be lonely. Finding mentors that are further along in their business not only helps you feel less alone, but gives you the opportunity to grow and learn!
I didn’t start working with other photographers until three years into my business and I wish I’d done it from the beginning.
