Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Natasha Roberts. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Natasha, appreciate you joining us today. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
While ASAP Commercial Doors is much larger than when I took over the business, we are just getting started! Stay tuned to see how we take over the door industry in our markets.
I found that the key to scaling my business (and any business) is building a great foundation. I had to revert back to basics and determine – what are our core values? Who is our ideal client? How do we want to make them feel after our service/installation?
Once we set solid core values, we started living by them. We hired/fired based on these said values.
If someone was not a good fit with our new culture, they weeded themselves out.
It took about 1 year but we built an amazing team that works cohesively together!
This significantly changed the trajectory of the business. We now have 1 team working toward the same goals.
Factor #2 in our recent success, I believe, is our re-brand that took place in 2022.
We did an overhaul and built a new brand and logo that gets attention everywhere we go. We re-wrapped our vehicles, new website, new uniforms. etc. While this was an investment up front, we have already seen it pay off HUGE. We are becoming a dominant brand in our markets.
Factor #3 – I learned to not be afraid to spend some money in marketing. It pays off if you can nurture your leads the correct way.
Factor #4 – Taking care of our clients. This will always be our most crucial task.
You take care of your clients, they will take care of you and refer you!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, my career and life has gone in a far different direction than I would have ever imagined. But things never go as you plan in life, right?
I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. I lived in a household of entrepreneurs. While I watched my parents work extremely hard to build their door business (ASAP Door Repair & Service, at the time) I was never interested in that. I had a love for business, finance, math (nerd, for sure).
After high school, I put myself in a bunch of student loan debt to earn some business degrees and went off into the corporate world! Working in trading operations for a major investment firm.
April 2016 is when everything changed for myself and my family.
My parents had been in a terrible motorcycle accident, leaving them both in the hospital for months.
At this time, I decided to walk away from my corporate job and step into the family business to ensure it did not close during this time. I had no idea the extent of my parents injuries and that it would still lead me to be in the business today.
In 2021, I officially acquired the company and became President & CEO. I started to implement some major changes and focus on growing the company, while remaining profitable.
Today – we have around 25 employees and opened a second location in the Carolinas. Within the next 3 years, I project we will be an 8 figure company!
Outside of the crazy, hectic, amazing company that I have grown to love – I am also a mother of two young children and a wife to an amazing husband. Balancing this work and family life can be extremely challenging at times. However, I am excited to have my children learn how to build a business and make a great living in the trades! My dream would be for them to join us one day.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Treating our clients with respect and always providing the BEST service that we can. We are not perfect, but when our company makes a mistake, we will always make it right.
Additionally, we love to send our clients surprise gifts, holiday gifts and always just take the time to thank them for their business and referrals.
In today’s world, it is hard to find companies or individuals that provide great service. We strive to be that company that does.
Conversations about M&A are often focused on multibillion dollar transactions – but M&A can be an important part of a small or medium business owner’s journey. We’d love to hear about your experience with selling businesses.
Yes, Back in 2019, my husband and I started a commercial cleaning company. We started in construction clean up and then shifted to janitorial.
Within 2 years we were almost at $1m/year – which is not an easy task in this industry.
We quickly learned this was not a business that either one of us were passionate about. It was completely draining our energy.
Ultimately, this secondary business was shifting my focus from my main company and we had to sell our contracts.
I learned many great lessons in this business! I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.
Biggest lesson: Do not lose focus! Stay consistent and the results will come.
