We were lucky to catch up with Natasha Rindt recently and have shared our conversation below.
Natasha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
There are moments when I wish I could hold down a regular job with a steady salary, but that’s just not me. Creative ideas are constantly swirling around my head, and if I don’t act on them, it starts to take a toll on my mental health. That being said, we all have to eat, and art alone isn’t always enough to pay the bills, so I turn to graphic design and other creative gigs to get by. Although the freelance lifestyle is filled with ups and downs, it allows me to try new things and continually evolve!
Natasha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a painter and canvas maker from Southern California, bright and sunny landscapes have always inspired me, and my favorite color has always been rainbow. My art is meant to make you smile and provide an escape from reality. Color is my therapy and the paintbrush is my tool to make a lasting mark on the world.
Along with the paintbrush, I picked up a saw a few years ago to build custom frames for canvases. In January 2022, the first ‘Odd Shape’ was born using masking tape and acrylic to render smooth gradients on one of my uniquely shaped canvases. I even crafted a footlong paintbrush called ‘Mega Brush’ using multiple brushes and a ruler to stabilize them. Infusing love and care into each shape, the result is a dimensional optical illusion with a vibrant spark of joy!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The rise of video content was beneficial for me. When I was a teen, you could find me on my bathroom floor with my camcorder filming paint drips on paper. I was entranced by the satisfying way the paint flowed. Capturing those quiet moments of creation felt like magic.
After sharing my art on social media for several years, a couple of my painting videos went viral in 2022. The videos that grew my audience the most were quick, satisfying, and edited to the beat of the music. I’m always searching for that same feeling of bliss I had when first filming those paint drips over 15 years ago.
If you’re working on building your own social media presence, my advice is to express your passions and show up in a way that feels exciting and authentic to you. Genuine connections are so much more important than going viral!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My art dreams were BIG in my early twenties. I hoped that the future would have it all: money, fame, and my own gallery! Now that I’m in my early thirties, I’ve realized that those material things aren’t important to me. My true goal is simple: it is just to create. For me, happiness is found in the time dedicated to my craft, and when I nurture that part of me, I can spread joy to the rest of the world.
