We were lucky to catch up with Natasha Remi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Natasha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’ve been transitioning into writing more music about the individual journey of growth and self-discovery. My first song in this new subject is called “Soul Speak” and was released about a year ago. Since around that same time, I’d been trying to write another song called “Mirror.” After multiple attempts over the course of the last 12 months, the song finally came to me at 2 a.m. while I was struggling to fall asleep. I’m happy to say that the song will be released this month!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am very lucky that from a young age I knew that I wanted to be involved in music and I have in the last decade been able to really create a life around it. My “tagline,” if you will, is that I am an artist all about the evolution. I want my music to grow and change as I have grown and changed. If you listen to the older songs in my discography, they cover a wide variety of genres and storylines. My vision currently is to write about how life has changed so significantly for a lot of people since the pandemic. We have all spent time reassessing ourselves and our priorities and I think sharing that journey is so important as we move forward in these unprecedented times.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
When people feel moved by my work or my voice, that’s what keeps me going. Sometimes I think I’m not doing anything that really makes a difference in the world, but when I know that have somehow inspired someone, whether it be through my artistry or just the way I live my life, I know that it’s enough.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I went through a tough break-up and as easy as it is for people to blame others for the downfall of a relationship, I chose to take responsibility for how contributed to its failing and have grown tremendously from it. But it also forced me to reassess how I was living my life; I was in such a hustle mindset that I had lost sight of the person I truly wanted to be. I’m still struggling to find balance, but I know I am making huge strides. And really, awareness is step one.
