We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Natasha Polk. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Natasha below.
Natasha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I decided to start my wig business after experiencing hair loss cause by stress and tension on my hair and scalp, medically called Traction Alopecia. While giving my hair a break from certain hairstyles I was recommended to try a variety of “protective styles”. When I started observing the choice of wigs I noticed a minimum amount of styles in human hair textures. High grade hair quality is very important. As a former Perfect Hair Collection Consultant, where I was selling and marketing hair extensions for another business, In 2017 I decided to see if I had what it takes to custom-make a wig for myself. After much practice and consistency along with observing celebrities wig makers, taking classes and custom making wigs for others, i was encouraged to start my business. In 2018, Lovely Contour was born. Wigs are the hottest accessory on the market right now. Women of all ages are wearing wigs for a variety of circumstances and I am blessed and fortunate that my business can accommodate.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I always had a fascination with the beauty industry. Most people don’t know that I have a Certificate of Completion in Cosmetology. My service consist of creating wigs for women who are experiencing hair loss due to alopecia, other medical reasons, cancer patients and to accommodate women in all professions and industries. For women who do not prefer wigs are more than welcome to inquire about our hair extensions used to create the units (wigs).
I am Grateful to be able to assist women in need and is most proud that my brand is receiving exposure to women in entertainment. I never imagine that my business would provide service for radio personalities, hosts, a singer (Tiffany Evans) for a music video or a supermodel (Jessica White) using our extensions for a hair campaign. The positive support that Lovely Contour has received is a great reflection of the quality of products and service that is provided. I am truly humbled and honored.
We also offer other popular fashion accessories such as Lovely Contour Lashes and signature sunglasses.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Knowledge is power! I have been impacted in so many ways when it come to managing my business and strengthening my mindset. I have read books such as “Boss Up” by Chika Ike, “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind” by T. Harv Eker, Think & Grow Rich , by Napoleon Hill and I am currently reading “Becoming A brand: by Nathalie Nicole Smith.
When starting my entrepreneurial journey I would also watch videos/podcast of other successful part and full time serial entrepreneurs, in fact I still do.
I attend conferences, webinars and joined a community for female entrepreneurs to assist with help keeping you focus to grow, scale and take your business to the next level.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn when I started my business was to be inspired and not to compare. I hesitated in the beginning to post my work because I felt that my creations was not ready to be expose to the world (despite the compliments). This is due to me comparing my work to others. If I did not have confidence in my work and the finishing results, why would anyone else? I posted and within a few hours I had my first customer; a very well known and popular radio personality in my hometown of Buffalo, NY (Radio ReddRoxx).
I hope this will encourage everyone to not be afraid to market your products no matter what stage your business may be.
