We were lucky to catch up with Natasha Lucas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Natasha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I suppose you can say that ever since I was a kid I always wanted to do something creative. I guess it just took me a while to figure out what exactly I wanted to do. For the longest I wanted to be a graphic novelist but my illustrations just weren’t that good. I’ve been obsessed with geek culture and comics and superheroes my entire life. That obsession is what led me to start cosplaying. It’s also what led me into martial arts and it continuously feeds my need to want to break out into the film industry.
Natasha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Natasha Grayson, online I’m known as Dixie Grayson. I’m a martial artist, a cosplayer, and aspiring filmmaker, a prop maker, and just an overall geek and nerd. I’m most known for cosplaying Nightwing and various members of the Batman family, I’ve been cosplaying for about 8 years now and I make all of my suits and armor by hand. I kind of just jumped head first into the cosplay world on my own and I gradually made friends as the years progressed by just improving on my work and upgrading constantly. I had already known about cosplaying but didn’t know anyone who did it so I had no real advice to go on except watching cosplayers on YouTube and kind of just doing my own thing. The first convention I ever went to was awesome Con 2016 in a very awful Nightwing suit that I just kind of threw together. When I went there and I saw how many hospitals were there and how good their outfits were I was just in awe. One thing that I feel sets me apart from other creators is I make original designs made by hand and I designed my suits in a way that doesn’t trade comfort for aesthetics. My suits are designed to look good but I also want people and myself to feel good and be able to move in them. Their design to have a degree of protection and maneuverability.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, and that goal or mission so to speak is to eventually make costumes that are used in film. As well as being able to act and do stunt work.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I feel like nfts are just an unnecessary fad that do nothing to support struggling artists. Nfts are not really relevant to me or my colleagues in cosplay because there’s nothing of note that nft’s due to support us as artists.
