We recently connected with Natasha Carter and have shared our conversation below.
Natasha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
The most innovative thing I have done in my career is to create a women’s support group for post-partum women that meets at my photography studio twice a month. I began to notice a need for new mothers who came in for the newborn portraits to have a need to connect to other new mothers. I created a group and I bring in therapists, specialists and other guest speakers who can talk to these women.
Natasha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began in this industry by working as a photographer’s assistant to a major wedding photographer in Dallas. She took me under her wing and really showed me how to get a “good eye” through the camera. Knowing weddings was not really my passion, I began to transition into families and then newborns about 10 years ago. I traveled to my clients home doing setups in their living rooms to photograph their new babies and then finally 3.5 years ago I put roots down in a studio in Argyle, Texas. I took workshops and seminars all focus on newborn safety and newborn photography. I now specialize in studio portraits of newborns which requires more hands-on posing and fabricating. Newborn photography is my passion. I love to be able to provide my clients a comfortable and welcoming studio space where parents can relax, knowing their newborn is in good hands (literally). I work hard to provide multiple setups including various props and colors that my clients can choose from. The more I can incorporate quickly into a newborn session, the better the variety of images within their gallery.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients has been previous clients. The word of mouth is the most powerful was to get your name out there. Asking for client recommendations and reviews is a huge key factor to success.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I opened my new studio in the summer of 2019. Then in March 2020, covid literally put everything to a halt and my new location was less than a year old. Several clients cancelled and I had to close the doors and pray that people would find the confidence and trust the safety of coming into the studio with their newborns again. It was a rock time and I wasn’t sure if I would make it out of 2020 with a business location.
