We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Natasha Boyd a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Natasha , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
A professor from Chicago University reached out to me after writing her first children’s book, which she wanted to turn into an animation. She was searching for a voice-over artist to bring the story to life and was referred to me by someone in Pakistan—a fact that both surprised and humbled me. It was a pivotal moment in my career, as it highlighted the growing reach of my work.
This project quickly became a major milestone. I provided a complete voice-over solution, delivering distinct and engaging voices for each character, along with the narrator. My ability to handle the entire project meant the professor didn’t need to seek additional voice artists, which saved her valuable time and effort. Seeing her excitement and satisfaction with the final product was incredibly rewarding.
Completing this project gave me a newfound sense of confidence. It proved that I could take on large, complex projects and deliver exceptional results. That experience fueled my determination to pursue more ambitious opportunities, knowing I had both the talent and creativity to succeed.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Natasha Torei, and I’m a voice-over artist. My passion for voices began unexpectedly during junior high school. I didn’t even realize I had this talent until I was, in a way, forced to discover it.
One day, my teacher called my home to inform my parents that I was being talkative and disruptive in class. Afraid of the consequences, I answered the phone myself, speaking in a deep tone and pretending to be my father. To my surprise, the teacher believed it without question and confidently mentioned the “conversation” with my dad the next day at school. That moment opened my eyes to a unique gift I didn’t know I had.
Although I had a background in theater from attending the Harlem School of the Arts, this newfound discovery gave my creative journey a fresh spark. Realizing I could bring characters to life through voice set me on a path to pursue voice-over artistry as both a craft and a passion.
What sets me apart from others is my deep appreciation for every project I take on. I believe in treating each one with the utmost respect and dedication, no matter how big or small. It’s not just about doing the job, but truly understanding my client’s vision and bringing it to life in a way that exceeds expectations. I put my heart into every voice I create, ensuring it’s not only a voice but an experience. That level of care and passion is what makes my work stand out.
What I’m most proud of is staying true to myself, my morals, and my values throughout my career. While I may not make as much money as some other artists, I refuse to compromise my integrity. I’ve turned down many projects because they involved profanity, explicit content, racial slurs, or anything I wouldn’t feel comfortable having children listen to. For me, it’s more important to create work that aligns with my values, and I’m proud of the fact that I’ve stayed true to that, even when it meant turning down opportunities. I want my work to reflect positivity and respect, and that’s the foundation of everything I do.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the belief that taking on projects for little to no money was just part of ‘paying my dues’ for exposure. Early on, I found myself agreeing to low-paying projects far too often, thinking it was the only way to grow in the industry.
But over time, I realized something crucial: the programming, high-quality equipment, and countless hours I invested to provide top-tier results weren’t being respected or fairly compensated. On top of that, I had spent thousands on training and coaching to hone my craft.
Continuing to accept projects for pennies devalued my work and made it difficult to grow sustainably. I learned that valuing my time and talent was essential, not just for me, but for the industry as a whole. Saying ‘no’ to lowball offers opened doors to better-paying opportunities and clients who respected my craft.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy for growing clientele has been targeting larger projects while consistently submitting demos and voice-over samples. Persistence is key !! I don’t let a lack of responses or a ‘no’ discourage me because each step, even rejection, brings me closer to a ‘yes.’ Additionally, I always carry my business cards, promptly answer calls, and ensure I return messages to maintain professionalism and accessibility. My ultimate goal is to secure a contract with a company or production team, which would elevate my career and unlock even more creative opportunities.
