We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Natania Marshall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Natania, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
When I was younger, I knew I wanted a career in the creative industry, and photography has always been second nature to me. It started with a Polaroid and a cell phone camera. Every time I looked through the lens of a camera, I felt moved to create and capture something beautiful that words cannot express. So, when I would capture spontaneous moments in nature, of a pile of sticks in the shape of a cross or a bee pollinating a flower, I saw the beauty of God’s creation and it truly felt like God was nudging me to see the world the way He does: with intention, beauty, and purpose. With photography becoming more than an art to me, but a way to capture the sacred in the everyday. I began to sense that this wasn’t just a skill or interest I had developed, but that it was calling. So with that passion of wanting to capture and create, I decided I wanted to create my own Photography business. As I carried this dream of being a Christian photographer who would help others see the light in themselves and their stories, there were moments I questioned this path. Whether it was through uncertainty, words from others, or comparison. But I kept feeling pulled back to this creative path, reminded that I’m not walking this journey alone. I believe God put this dream in my heart for a reason, and I choose to trust Him with it. So, when I realized that this was something I truly wanted to pursue, despite all the questioning. I started to execute my vision for this business. I created social media accounts and a website that visualized the style I wanted my business to have, and I started taking photos of close friends and local events that would help build my portfolio. Once I felt confident about the style, my business displayed online, I knew it was time to start the launch. If there’s a dream in your heart that won’t leave you alone, it’s there for a reason. Sometimes God doesn’t speak through a booming voice, but through the passions He plants in us.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an event, lifestyle, and political photographer. I capture life as it unfolds with timeless elegance and a chic visual sensibility- photos that won’t age with trends but will feel just as meaningful decades from now. Photography has always been more than just a career path for me- it’s a way to preserve emotion, elegance, and energy in a single frame. Since I’ve started in photography, I’ve been capturing everything from political events to lifestyle portraits and nature. In which all of these different kinds of shoots have taught me to anticipate emotion before it surfaces. Events trained my eye for detail. And lifestyle work that reminds me to slow down and find the story in everyday life.
Ever since I was young, I have been a creative with a wild imagination. I wanted to capture everything around me, whether through a camera or in a drawing. I fell in love with photography. It became a career I chased throughout my time in public school. I was involved in performing arts classes and keyboarding, which included photo editing projects. When I reached high school, I joined the yearbook team while taking photo and video editing classes. I enjoyed the storytelling that a single photo could hold. But once I started college, photography became a hobby I continued. Yet, as soon as I graduated from college and started work in the Washington, DC, area. Photography wasn’t just a hobby anymore; but it became a career. I started capturing candid moments of many political leaders and influencers. That inspired and drove me to create my very own photography business.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
For me, photography is more than capturing a moment- it’s about creating a space for people to encounter something bigger than themselves. My deepest hope is that through the photos I take, people won’t just see an image, but will feel the presence of God. Every shoot is an invitation to slow down, to breathe, to be seen, and valued. I want people not to just walk away with photos, but with a sense of peace, connection, and a glimpse of the way God sees them. This is what drives me: to create images and moments where God’s presence is felt. My camera is my tool, but His presence is the true focus.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a Christian photographer, the most rewarding part of my creative journey isn’t just capturing beautiful images – it’s witnessing how God moves through them. There’s something sacred about holding space for someone to remind them they’re seen, loved, and known. It’s in those moments, behind the lens, that I feel the Holy Spirit the most. It’s not about the perfect shot, but about what’s happening in the hearts of the people I photograph. Creativity is a gift from God, and when we create with Him, we reflect His heart. photography is worship, it’s a way to honor the beauty he’s placed in people and the world around us. The reward isn’t followers or fame, it’s knowing I get to partner with God in reminding people of their worth. That’s what makes this journey so meaningful. And as long as he’s leading – I’ll keep creating!
