Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Natalija Stojanovic. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Natalija thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning Scientific Illustration and Natural Science Illustration while teaching about the natural world and its wonders

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My academic background lies in the field of scientific illustration. Immediately following my university education, I engaged in several scientific projects within the realm of archaeology. My primary goal was to popularize science through diverse multimedia mediums, which included the creation of illustrations, reconstructions, animations, 3D models, virtual panoramas, website design, participation in conferences, contributions to publications, and involvement in exhibitions. Currently, I am furthering my expertise in the domain of naturalistic illustration by pursuing a certification in Natural Science Illustration through the RISDCE.
Driven by an unwavering passion for both art and science, I initiated my teaching journey at the university level, subsequently extending it to an art studio. In early 2022, I transitioned towards online teaching, where I developed several online courses tailored for students aged 8 to 16. I offer these courses as a member of a teacher cooperative on Outschool.com.
One of my ongoing courses, ‘Scientific Illustration: Where Art Meets Science,’ is centered around the precise rendering of various specimens from the domains of biology, geology, paleontology, archaeology, and astronomy. Simultaneously, students acquire profound knowledge of the scientific aspects related to the subjects they portray. I also offer courses such as ‘Avian Wonders’ and ‘Botanical Wonders,’ which delve into the intricate worlds of bird and flower species, respectively. Additionally, I instruct Benjamin Corey’s ‘Art of Zoology’ and ‘Art of Paleontology.’ Through these classes, my objectives extend beyond mere teaching; I aim to nurture my students’ inquisitiveness and fascination with the extraordinary diversity of the natural world and foster an increased awareness of the critical importance of environmental conservation and the protection of endangered species.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission revolves around the relentless exploration and representation of the natural world through the mediums of scientific and natural science illustration. This endeavor encompasses not only the continuous acquisition of new knowledge about various species and natural processes but also the constant refinement and exploration of a diverse range of artistic techniques, encompassing both analog and digital approaches.
I am currently enrolled in the RISDCE certificate program, which I anticipate completing in the spring of the upcoming year. My commitment to expanding my expertise is evident through my prior completion of several certified courses offered by universities and museums in the field. Additionally, I maintain a list of several more courses I aspire to undertake in the future. This academic journey fills me with enthusiasm and anticipation at each step.
Regarding my foray into teaching, my vision is expansive, encompassing various projects, such as the development of educational picture books for children, the creation of innovative online courses and programs tailored for younger learners, and, eventually, the provision of in-person classes at local studios or educational institutions. These endeavors share a common goal: to disseminate my unending curiosity about the natural world to the upcoming generations. My aim is to instill in them the understanding that the most effective means of researching and appreciating the natural world involves the harmonious fusion of art and science.
Interdisciplinary approaches that bridge the domains of art and science, as well as those that foster connections across all fields, serve as more than just engaging educational tools for children. They serve as invaluable lenses for observing and interpreting the world, shaping well-rounded and informed individuals with a profound appreciation for the interplay between various disciplines.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Numerous invaluable resources for learning, including literature and the works of distinguished masters, are steadily making their presence felt on various online platforms. I deeply appreciate the existence of such resources and eagerly anticipate the continuation of my online studies and teaching initiatives.
Another essential resource, though not necessarily prioritized in any particular order, is the natural environment. Residing in the picturesque state of Michigan, where I am enveloped by diverse flora and fauna, significantly influences my artistic work. The rich biodiversity and scenic beauty of this locale have a profound impact on the quality and character of my illustrations.
The third vital resource consists of interpersonal connections. Building meaningful relationships and actively sharing ideas can open up new avenues and possibilities. These connections have played an indispensable role throughout my creative journey. While I do not attribute my prior lack of knowledge regarding these resources to any shortcomings, I certainly wish I had acquired the ability to harness their potential at an earlier stage.
Outschool did not initially serve as my primary platform, but my prior experiences with alternative platforms eventually led me to it. Likewise, Michigan was not my first place of residence, but I now find immense contentment in this locale, which offers an abundance of natural beauty for me to draw and portray.
Expanding one’s outreach to the community is a formidable task, and it is evident that the cultivation of this resource will require time. Nevertheless, the convergence of these resources in due course holds the promise of unveiling fresh avenues for creativity. I eagerly anticipate the exploration of these novel pathways in my artistic journey.
