Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Natalie Wilson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Natalie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
My very first client ever, many many years ago, was also one of my first lessons. Never complete a job without receiving payment. In a time when digital cameras were in their infancy and Adobe wasn’t as great as it is now, starting out was not pleasant. I was part of a Mom’s Night out group which connected me with a woman who wanted wedding pictures taken. Her budget was extremely low and since I was just starting out, I didn’t mind the small budget. She knew this was a first for me. I was nervous and scared, but I put my best foot forward. I took away so much about developing as a photographer and business owner from that day. it’s more than just having a nice camera. It’s being effective with taking your shots and getting the details, and all the little things that count. It’s about knowing your gear, inside and out. I cringe at these images now, but I had just began- so really, I can’t be harsh on that person I was. When I delivered her disk of images, I never received payment from her. In essence, she didn’t pay me and told me that my work sucked. After that experience, not only did I work on myself and becoming better at photography, but I wasn’t going to complete a job without being paid first. Not the most beautiful story, but one that I truly learned from and that helped me grow into who I am today. I’m constantly working on myself so that I can be happy with the pictures I take.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I had always been interested in photography growing up. I never dreamed that I would be making money someday. I only wanted to take pictures and I fell in love with the art. I looked up to Ansel Adams and Tony Stromberg, amazing photographers, wanting to be successful like them. I read through so many books and shot for friends, neighbors, acquaintances in hopes of finding my niche. During those times I didn’t know what to call it, but I was definitely trying to find myself. I the experience I have and the love of photography sets me apart from most. I truly love capturing moments in time. I’m not Ansel or Tony, but they had their time when not everyone was a photographer. I have to find ways to draw in potential clients by being different, editing differently, and utilizing my personality to get close to others. I tend to be more of a friend than a hired contractor and develop connections with everyone I meet. Those people continue to come back every year and I’ve watched their families grow up/get bigger. It’s been wonderful to see. My brand is me. I care a lot and I think that says a lot about me as a small business owner. It’s about more than making money.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
For me, it’s the connections with others that brings in new clients. From the venues to officiants, I find most of my work comes from within the wedding community. Google and social media can also play a role in delivering new potential leads, but not as much as human connection can. Past clients and word of mouth are important. This is why I like to make others feel important and special, because they are but also because they know they can trust that I won’t let them down if they refer me to someone. I don’t want any one upset with their experience. I provide clarity, understanding, care, and reassurance.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I worked other jobs in order to pay for my equipment. Currently, I work a weekday job in order to fund my business. It’s not a huge money maker, but it makes money enough for me to keep doing it and support my kids. I can continue to do what I love, but also make sure my family is fed and we have a roof over our heads. I’ve been doing this for so long that I eventually do want to rely on just my business, but in the current world we live in, I think that is near impossible.
