We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Natalie Nova. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Natalie below.
Natalie , appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I live for this and was born to create, write and perform music. I have known since childhood this has been my destiny. Even if the road on this path can often be rocky, I wouldn’t have it any other way than doing what I love to and have a mission here on this planet to do. Music brings us together and plays an essential role in the lives of most, if not all people. Authentic and human made music created from the heart and soul has the capacity to make an impact of the lives as well as relate to other human beings and even in some cases, saves lives.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Natalie Nova. I am a music artist, vocalist, multi instrumentalist, event producer, DJ and more. I am in currently two bands outside of my solo project (Natalie Nova). My solo project mostly consists of melodic rock, with elements of blues as well as heavy metal as well. This is a multi genre project, not meant to be boxed in, however to any set genre, thus maintain genre freedom and diversity. My main band, Beyond The Roots is a melodic thrash metal band has been my first main project, (as the other projects are works in progress, however and are currently been unannounced and unreleased.) Before starting my band I would Dj when living in Northern California at shows and festivals and soon to be re-launching my new DJ Alias, Novatron, which will have live vocals, instruments as well as other live elements. Aside from my personal music projects, I am also a musician for hire, teach lessons and even throw local underground metal events to bring the community together and find new ways to support each other and come together through music. As a session musician, I offer collaborations in vocals and songwriting, creative direction, lyrics and more. What is different when it comes to my work, and what is important to me is my direction, focus, and purpose. Meaningful direction and message based music is what the world needs more of and is what also differentiates me from the rest. We can make an impact and make the world a better place!

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
This is not only a story of myself, but a story of resilience of my band, Beyond The Roots, as well. Against all odds, we never give up regardless what we have been through this past year, we keep on going. I am a survivor of two major car accidents last year, and still play and create despite injuries from these incidents. Michelle Pickering, Beyond The Roots drummer was diagnosed last year with Stage 4 Lung cancer and is a survivor of cancer as well. Despite pulling through and finally feeling much better after extreme hard times and difficulty, especially with breathing, things have been improving drastically and she is able to play again, even through restrictions with resilience. A friend and fan passed this past January, which Beyond The Roots played a memorial show for and regardless of any pain or suffering we put together a line up last minute, and even found fill ins with short notice in time for the show. Michelle Is a true warrior and played this show of fast blazing and technical thrash metal with her oxygen tank in tact. Even playing through the pain, myself we realize there is a greater purpose in life we are here for on this planet and we only have one life to live. Beyond all odds.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think if society started valuing the arts more it would be beneficial to all involved. Rather than taking away programs in schools for children to learn the arts, or having artists and bands pay to perform live at venues or selling presale tickets, (which is partially one of the reasons I started throwing events myself) Music and art should be valued more, not monopolized and capitalized off of, but to provide compensation for artists and creatives to live off of their craft, like any other profession. After all the costs of production, videos, publication and more, without being signed, everything is out of pocket and the artist has to take on some, if not most or all in most cases of these roles especially in DIY circumstances. There should be sponsorship programs offered for bands and artists to create and release music, produce and perform shows and actually receive a paycheck like any other job. I understand the saturation level of creatives but that shouldn’t limit or minimize creative output. Streaming services should offer proper royalties or should be be regulated all together with the hard work, time and money that goes into creating music which can be limiting to low income, or disabled musicians and artists. As for creating a thriving ecosystem, there could be many programs and workshops could be introduced not only for the youth, but bringing environmental and permaculture factors to awareness. For a thriving ecosystem, even in one specific industry, we need to consider planetary health and ecological awareness into protecting our environment, wildlife, land and actual ecosystems as well, aside from community creative and economy.
