We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Natalie Lamar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Natalie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
In todays world, we are fortunate to have a wide variety of personalities in the work force. It is of the utmost importance to create an environment where everyone feels free to grow towards the best version of themselves. Only then, can you truly provide an inclusive experience for employees and guests alike.
Natalie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Our mission at Daddy’s 10-13 Diner is to provide a warm, inviting dining atmosphere where everyone feels welcome and at home. When guests sit down, they are taken back to the days at grandma’s house for Sunday dinner. Leave your differences at the door and share a piece of pie.
Any advice for managing a team?
In the industry, it is rare to find a level headed chef or kitchen manager. When this opportunity was afforded to me, I decided then that I would not compromise my strong value of mutual respect.
Too often, the person that is leading the group, is also the person that is most detrimental to the flow of a successful kitchen. When a leader gets frustrated, as we all do, they are rarely afforded the moment needed to make a rational, compassionate decision. I approach each day with an open heart, which allows me to approach each task with an open mind.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
For over a decade, I was the executive director of our small town Chamber of Commerce. I was very fortunate to get to work with some of the most influential people in town. I learned a lot there and met a lot of people. A new business opened in town, a massage therapy and holistic health spa which was a new concept in small town Missouri. Being the mother of one of the proprietors, she was in attendance at their ribbon cutting ceremony. Instantly, I recognized her as a kindred spirit and we became fast friends. She later served on my board for several successful years. At my next employer, I worked with her in commodities. During covid and the great reset, she approached me with the opportunity to fulfil my dreams…owning and managing my own restaurant. It has been a match made in heaven. Our philosophy from the beginning has been, “Do it the right way and the universe will provide…” Keeping that philosophy in mind we have been able to create 13 livable wage jobs, provide our small town with quality meals at a reasonable fare, and operate our first 2 years in the black.
