We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Natalia Rocafuerte. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Natalia below.
Natalia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear your thoughts about making remote work effective.
As a independent video, graphic animator and editor, I started my work through creating commissioned and collaborative visuals for brands, festivals and bands during live performances. My production services shifted to online streaming services during the pandemic having had a background working as a live TV editor as a day job. During the pandemic, I packed my car and moved from Austin Texas to my fellowship graduate program at University of Michigan. Shifting the excitement, organization and process of live visuals from a venue to a streaming platform allowed me to work remotely with organizations I still loved in Austin while living outside Detroit in Ypislanti, Michigan. I streamed community PPE distributions in north Austin, Latinx Experimental Festivals, comedy shows and art pieces along with gaining production and graphic clients through these live services. I continue to provide these services for my clients now from a beautiful remote area from Minnesota.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an independent creative video and graphic studio having a background as a Photographer, Video Editor, Programs Director and Curator in museums, nonprofits, festivals, community organizations, national brands and most recently a global industrial company.
In bold color and a little experimenting, I build graphics, streams, brands, videos and creative projects for organizations and individuals who are seeking unique experiences using archival or content they already have. What is unique about my studio is that I emphasize working with what your archives already has, I re-animate historical material, like home movies or photographs and curated a narrative.
I have a sensitivity and passion for working in Latinx/ Chicano communities having grown up on bordertowns and being bilingual. My passion for experimental film and community building had lead me to be om boards and committees for the nation’s Latinx Arts communities in the West Coast, Southwest and Midwest.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Bringing new perspectives into ideas and media/materials is my favorite part of creativity! :)
I love being able to bring interest to historical information or a particular space or place by intertwining digital arts into the mix.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think everyone can be creative! The name of the game is taking initiative and being able to own mistakes while taking risks. A lot of times, I feel as a creative my job is taking innovative and taking risks others might be too self contious to or do research that others might not do. Initiative and consitancy is my formula for creativity and finalizing a project.
