We recently connected with Natalia Osorio and have shared our conversation below.
Natalia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Happiness has been a driven factor for me and one of the reasons why I started Mixed Cake Co.
I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression for such a long time and happiness has always been a goal to achieve. When I started baking, I realized that keeping my mind active at all times, keeping physical, working around others and not behind a computer screen at all times really helped me. Whenever you see a beautiful cake come out of the oven, there’s a sense of pride as you can say “I made that!”. What better way to support my mental health than to become a baker and make other people happy with my creations and art. I wanted that fulfillment, I wanted to make others feel happy on their special moments!
My driven factor has evolved and eventually I want to be able to teach other women in the community like me who need an outlet to express their feelings and what better way to do it than through baking and creating. A study published in the Journal of positive psychology found that those who engage in creative projects like cooking and baking, are happier in their day-to-day lives. They found a correlation between everyday creativity and positive psychological functioning. This is one of the reasons why my goal has been to open a bakery that not only creates beautiful delicious cakes but also teaches others to create through baking.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi my name is Natalia I was born in Colombia but grew up in New Jersey and now I live in the Lovely city of Tampa, Fl. From a very young age I’ve always had a passion for baking! It runs in the family. Have you ever seen the movie encanto? Well, I lived in a 3 story home with my parents, uncles and grandparents. My grandmother would sit me by the window overlooking the flower garden on her kitchen counter and cook her traditional South American foods like empanadas, pastries, arepas, hot chocolate, you name it and she would know how to do it! We had a huge flower garden that she would tend to every morning, It was a dream garden! We even had a coffee bean tree! It’s safe to say my family definitely had the most amazing coffee in the mornings that you can smell all the way up to the 3rd floor. We had a dog, birds and sometimes even rabbits that my grandfather would bring from working on cabins In the mountains. My other grandmother used to bake wedding cakes when she was younger and my mother taught me how to make my first batch of cupcakes. You can safely say it’s a family thing!
Mixed Cake Co is a blend of all those beautiful things that remind me of my child hood. My creations come alive with beautiful florals, colors, tropical fruits, and Mixed flavors to create the perfect Cake or Dessert Table for each and every customer. Every single detail of my customers events are special and that is why I often create new and unique dessert options for them.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When I opened Mixed Cake co on instagram, I had no customers, no followers, and no content but I knew I wanted to show my journey. I started posting cupcakes and cakes that I had made as practice and started following popular locations in Tampa area. I would post daily stories about what I was making or creating and talk about the flavors and specials I wanted to do for the end of that year. Little by little I started getting followers and likes on my content. I also Decided to start sharing my baked goods at markets and at work! My family was also a big part of my business growth as they would share my business with their friends and coworkers. As my customer base started growing, I started creating amazing friendships who also shared my work with others! I can truly say I have the most amazing customers who care and support my business.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Working with event planners, wedding planners and photographers has been an amazing source of new clients! It is always a great way to meet new vendors and to be able to show my beautiful cakes and desserts on others social media pages. I always jump on the opportunity of styled photoshoots. Not only are they fun but incredibly valuable and amazing content to have.
