We were lucky to catch up with Natalia Mangubat recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Natalia, thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Once upon a brand storm, my branding was a question brought into focus after opportunity and passion for specialty cupcakes grew into a business. How can I be myself in a professional name and on point for the product offered- in a world filled with options? As a baker, I went with “The Batter Scoop Cupcakery”. The business began with specialty cupcakes, so I wanted it to resonate with my original treat in that manner with the kitchen creations I shared with many. It was so hard because when branding you also want to think and plan around marketing, and as my consulting friend taught me, it needed to be hashtag and logo-capable, or it could miss my target audience.
I couldn’t pick just one name, to me, it had to have a meaning, and most importantly it had to resonate with who I am. I am a spiritual person, and aware of what my loved ones have gifted to me through generations, I was always listening for their input. One night- I was doing dishes after making some delicious cupcakes for my friend at Lux Counseling & Consulting (another Latina powerhouse) as a thank-you gift -when I heard a little voice in my head say: “the batter scoop”. It was nurtured from there, and polished into its own “The Batter Scoop Cupcakery”.
Soon after I decided to search within me for another adventure that completed me and didn’t make me dread Mondays, “The Hair Batty” was born. It was easier to decide on this brand name compared to my first one because my mission was to create beautiful hair and be able to help “batty” babes to express themselves through hair. Coincidentally enough, my last name is ManguBAT and I always have to spell it out for people or break it down into words like “mago” and “bat” for people to be able to write it correctly so that is a fun fact. Significant too, I thought to myself, the use of the term “baddie” as a compliment popularized so I decided to mix it up and make it mine to strategically market myself. No brainer!
Thank you for the opportunity to talk about the creation of my very genuine contributions to the Central Texas Community. I do want to take time to thank my support system because without all of them, I wouldn’t be here today talking about cupcakes and hairstyling making me feel accomplished and a role model to my daughter- while spreading love and genuine self vibes- none of it feels like work.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Natalia Mangubat and I am a mother and a wife. I moved to the United States back in 2012. Since then, I went to school for culinary arts and later on decided to switch careers and enrolled in cosmetology school to become a hairstylist. I want to fully specialize in alternative hair, vivids, blonding, and cuts.
I think being myself and authentic with my audience sets me apart from others and that’s something that I am proudest of. I want everyone to know that you can be successful and still be happy with your job.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes. For sure, my mission is and always has to be able to make people feel beautiful and happy with themselves through hair.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the feeling of fulfillment once your creation brings joy to someone.
