We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Natalia Gonzalez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Natalia below.
Natalia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Most of the time, creating feels more like a necessity than a job. It’s like if you don’t create, you’ll burn from the inside out, so having a creative career is easy. What’s hard is earning a full-time living, and many creative souls have to give up pursuing their dreams because it is very challenging to be economically successful at the beginning. I encourage everyone to hold on, even if you need a 9 to 5 for some time. Keep creating until you can earn money out of it. Don’t give up. Ever.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been obsessed with stories: telling stories, hearing stories, or watching stories. That’s why I discovered very early in my life all I wanted to do was to bring all of those stories around me to the screen.
Now, I’m a film and video producer based in Los Angeles.
At the beginning of my career, I produced over 100 branded videos and TV commercials for various companies in Mexico. Then, I relocated to Los Angeles to work as the Associate Producer in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s most recent feature, “Bardo.” I’m currently developing a feature film and a show.
I now have a deep understanding of the video and film production process, but more importantly than that, I’ve understood that the greatest you can do as a producer is to create a safe space where honest stories can come to life.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
“The Creative Act: A Way of Being” by Rick Rubin is an absolute gem. It helped me to understand that I was not alone in this journey and that my dreams, frustrations, and disappointments were valid.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
We need to consume more indie content, whether it is music, films, books, paintings, or sculpture. Help people who are starting, give them financing, or buy their art. Believe in them.
