We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nasira Cooley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nasira, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
In my early teens I declared I would pursue a career in classical ballet. My parents were supportive of my dreams but kept me in touch with reality. They facilitated my ballet training but continuously reminded me of the importance of my academic education and my potential to use my intellectual capabilities. When high school graduation approached, my parents presented my options, which included attending a competitive college dance program of my choice, or remaining in Seattle to continue ballet training – with the condition that I would support myself and find a place to live. I was faced with a harsh reality, making my choice quite easy. I am grateful that my parents put the decision in my hands and they never discouraged me from achieving my goals. When I began my undergrad studies at the University of Arizona, I had no interest in pursuing anything but ballet. However, when I arrived to campus as a freshman, my parents suggested I add a second major so that I’d have a backup or at least a post-dance career option. My mom proposed nutritional science and I thought it was a rationale choice. Even then I recognized that nutrition could impact my dance performance. So, I began college as a dual major in dance and nutrition science. I attended the University of Arizona for four years where I completed a dual degree (dance and nutritional sciences) and a minor in chemistry. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, as I was able to perform ballet as well as discover and nurture my passion for science through my coursework and position as an undergraduate research assistant. My parents helped me discover new interests and opportunities that ultimately led me to a long-term fulfilling career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I spent the first 18 years of my life in the Seattle, WA area where I completed high school and pursued a career in classical ballet. I grew up on a small farm where we grew a variety of produce and raised animals including chickens, goats, and dogs. I continued my pursuit of a nutrition career and obtained a Master’s in Public Health from UCLA and a Doctorate in Nutritional Sciences from Loma Linda University. I am a NASM certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist as well as a certified yoga instructor. I am a private practice registered dietitian and adjunct faculty member at Chapman University. I serve as the nutritionist for the ABT Gillespie School at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the Chapman University School of Dance, AMDA College of Performing Arts, and Vivante on the Coast Senior Community.
As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, I use my best knowledge and skills to help and guide individuals and families. This includes following the standards of the American Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics and using the most currently available evidence-based nutrition information. I provide a variety of programs and services that help people establish realistic nutrition goals, plan meals, and improve food management. I can provide highly specialized food lifestyle management such as nutrition for dance or sports performance as well as nutrition therapy for gut health, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, PCOS or other conditions. I can also make recommendations specific for your fitness goals, including a personal workout plan, optimal pre-workout meals, and post-workout recovery foods.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I’ve developed a niche as a dietitian for dancers. I attribute the reputation I’ve built to my known history as a classical ballet dancer and the connections I’ve made with reputable dance schools in the area, such as the American Ballet Theater School at Segerstrom and Chapman University School of Dance.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Absolutely. A career in nutrition and dietetics allows a diverse array of experiences and the opportunity to work with a variety of people with different needs. As a private practice registered dietitian, I have the flexibility I need to raise my kids and generally achieve work-life balance.
