Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nasir Kenneth Ferebee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Nasir Kenneth , thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
The very first dollar I made as a creative was working as a Production Assistant at Vh1. At that time in my career, I had finished three internships and would commute from my hometown of Philadelphia to New York City to intern. During my college career, I accumulated student loan debt and used that money to commute to internships so when I received my first check as a production assistant it was not only a huge relief but an incredibly proud moment. It was a full circle moment and culmination of all of my hard work and sacrifice being rewarded.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
From the age of thirteen, I always knew that I wanted to work in the entertainment industry, live in Los Angeles, and be an entrepreneur. The careers of Jay-Z, Oprah Winfrey, Spike Lee, and John Singleton inspired me immensely to go after my dreams. I started my career as a film student at Temple University and an intern at the Philadelphia Film Office. Early on, I recognized how important it was to be strategic in working in major markets so I got internships at Teen Nick and Mtv News & Docs in New York City. After graduating college, I worked as a Production Assistant at Vh1.
Eventually, I was able to afford an apartment in Jersey City. Being able to explore NYC was a huge turning point for me. I gained access to different food, culture, music, people, everything. That city molded me into a higher version of myself. It was there that I climbed the ranks for intern to producer. I worked at various companies like Lifetime, Bravo, The Oprah Winfrey Network, and NBC. However, I always had my sights set on Hollywood and ten years ago, I took the leap and moved to Los Angeles to make movies.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is getting a chance to be a team leader as a producer and giving others an opportunity to make content and get paid for it.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
One easy way that society can support artists is by recognizing that we work hard to create projects to entertain and uplift the masses. If you simply tell an artist “thank you”, that alone feels like a huge victory.
