We were lucky to catch up with NASHA CLARK recently and have shared our conversation below.
NASHA, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share a story with us from back when you were an intern or apprentice? Maybe it’s a story that illustrates an important lesson you learned or maybe it’s a just a story that makes you laugh (or cry)? Looking back at internships and apprenticeships can be interesting, because there is so much variety in people’s experiences – and often those experiences inform our own leadership style.
I interned at Roc Nation from 2015-2016. I felt as though I made it once I got the call. I was extremely naive and didn’t realize I in fact did not make it and this is where the hard work would actually began. I put in a lot of hours between waitressing and being in a ranked graduate program at the time. There were days that I felt I wasn’t fully recognized for my contributions and days I questioned if I went hard enough. I was just happy to be in the building at first before I realized I belonged and needed to start acting like it. Roc Nation was a microcosm of a bigger world. I took loses, wins and gained beautiful relationships to this day. Roc Nation inspired me to be an entrepreneur. I took everything I learned and tried to create my own ecosystem and similarly modeled my business acumen. After 2 years of planting seeds, I noticed things started to blossom. I’m grateful to all of those at Roc Nation that helped me grow, learn and discovery myself during that time in my life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nasha Clark. I’m from New York born and raised. I started Nasha Clark Inc unofficially on Feb 22, 2018 launching my internship program. I didn’t have any clients at the time just passion and a dream. I hired 3 interns and explained to them this would be a very ground level experience. They obliged and a month later we landed our first major client and the rest is history.
I’ve always wanted to be in the entertainment industry from young. It was my time at Roc Nation that really inspired me to fully devote my time to seeing if entrepreneurship was for me. I really pride myself on being a person of my word/integrity. I’m aware those aren’t necessarily industry norms but it’s something I stand by. I’d rather continue to work my way up by my means than compromise who I am and what I believe in. I’m most proud of how I built myself up without any handouts. I used to think that was the only way I’d become successful but it’s possible to built your own network by being consistent and relentless. My ultimate goal is for Nasha Clark Inc to be recognized as a global brand one day,
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Not to take everything so personally. I really didn’t understand the business world when I first started out and I used to have my feelings hurt all the time. I used to take it all so personally from people who didn’t even know me but were looking out for their best interest. Unfortunately, it’s just business and once I learned that I was better able to maneuver. I mean there’s so many examples of being passed on for internships, not getting credited for my contributions or having clients/people I thought would be with me to the end of my career. It’s really just life and now I just live by allowing things and relationships to flow naturally. I welcome who/what stays and wish well to those that go.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The referrals have been more than I could have ever imagined. I get several referrals a month and while I don’t accept them all, I’m still very grateful clients have found my work to be that incredible they recommend other talent/friends. It’s really fulfilling. It makes all of those long hours and trying times worth it. Also, press has also helped people learn about me and all I’ve done. I’m grateful to all of the publications that have reached out!
