We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nas Nixx a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nas , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I took a big risk in 2020 when I quit my juice bar job and went full in to be a freelance photographer. I only had one job lined up, that was a photoshoot with Jeffrey Campbell. My biggest job I had gotten get with no other ones lined up. I felt in my heart I needed to quit working at the juice bar making smoothies and be my own boss and put my full attention to my craft. I’m so happy I did this even when people said I should just do photography while I work at the juice bar because in that first year I made way more money than I did working a normal minimum wage job which I went to everyday. I worked less days and made more money and I was so in shock and happy with taking that risk. It saved my mental health too because I got to stay home and experience life finally. I got to go on picnics on a random Tuesday, go on walks or just be lazy at home and think of new concepts for photoshoots. I encourage everyone to take risks because as soon as you do and you only have that option to succeed you will succeed because you have no plan B now.
Nas , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Nas Nixx and I’m a photographer and director who creative directs all my work. I’m in the LA fantasy scene. I started taking photos of elves and fairies in 2019 and that became my signature in my images. Having elf ears. This is part of a bigger project I have been working on called “species of the multiverse” where I’ll be exploring creatures I have created or put my own spin on existing mythical creatures. I have always been fascinated with fantasy and making up my own work. That is what I strive for with my audience. I want my work to feel like an escape.
I started photography when I was very young but in highschool is when I got exposed to film photography which changed my life. I fell in love with it and the physical process of developing and printing my images. Because I learned photography using old film cameras that’s what I feel most comfortable using now. I still mainly do photoshoots with h film camera and occasionally use my digital camera as well.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is inspiring people and being authentically myself and having people see me for who I am. I put my heart in all my photoshoots or music videos I work on. I feel like an open book which I like because growing up I felt I needed to hide my true self incase others don’t approve but now they can see my true self and if they don’t like it they can leave. Being a full time artist has made me so much more confident in myself and also made me more in touch with the earth. I feel like I find inspiration in any little thing now.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started gaining an audience for my photography in 2019 once I started doing my elf photoshoots. I think people like seeing consistency, that’s one of the most important things to do if you want to grow your audience. I also think connecting with your fans is important. But my biggest advice is don’t be afraid of what people will think. They will think it’s cringe now but in a year when it’s your full time job they might not and ask you for advice.
