We were lucky to catch up with Naomie Joasil recently and have shared our conversation below.
Naomie , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Quality control is a challenge almost every entrepreneur has had to focus on when growing – any advice, stories or insight around how to best ensure quality is maintained as your business scales?
When adapting to growth and changes, it is crucial to prioritize delivering high-quality services over just maximizing profits and efficiency. Being efficient does not necessarily mean that the services provided are of high quality. To ensure quality, I follow two main strategies that have worked for me – product strategy and organizing. Product strategy involves defining precise functionality, having a clear vision, being creative, and making a pros and cons list to evaluate its relevance. Organizing, on the other hand, involves creating a schedule that allows for a smooth flow of work. By using these two approaches, I have been able to deliver services that truly reflect my brand, and I am proud of that. My advice is to be self-aware and put yourself in the shoes of your customers to fully grasp the concept of providing quality services.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I developed an interest in my craft at a young age because of my living environment. Initially, it was challenging to find a diverse representation of people who looked like me and shared my lifestyle. So, I decided to bridge the gap and provide solutions. I want to teach everyone that they are not responsible for other people’s opinions so might as well do it all and give it your best. This led me to develop my creative works.
Most people don’t know this, but I am a nurse, and I take great pride in my profession. I love helping people and witnessing the livelihood of different stages in life. In addition to my nursing career, I offer services in traveling, lifestyle, beauty, and cosmetics content. My audience often asks me for tutorials like makeup and hair, medical career statistics, safety travel tips, and fashion inclusivity.
What sets me apart is that I embody my brand regardless of whether I have a following or not. The way I represent myself through the lens is the same way I present myself in reality. The achievement I am most proud of is inspiring young black girls like me and showing them that they deserve upcoming opportunities. When people see me and my brand, I want them to feel like they are in a safe space to be themselves.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Consistency and engagement have been the most effective strategy for me to grow my clientele. The new reformed social landscape demands transparency, and I have found that active interactions bring more excitement and insight into my life. This is the core concept of my brand. When it comes to consistency, it all boils down to being organized and having a schedule. I have a set routine of posting, doing live videos, and sharing try-on hauls. This approach helps me create the best content because there are no rough cuts and edits. Professional videos with too much editing often unintentionally hide the bad parts, making viewers feel unsatisfied with the final product. I also love doing live videos because they feel like FaceTime, and my clients can comment and share their thoughts freely.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
As a proponent of video essays, I find them to be an effective way of presenting ideas in an informal yet visually structured manner. “Social Media’s Obsession with Aesthetics and Curated Identities” & “Our Obsession With Beauty is Dystopian” by Shanspeare are two videos that have significantly impacted my perception of new entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy and how it relates to my brand. Both videos highlight the limitations of being confined to a single perspective. Although I started with a clear vision, I am now experimenting with different styles. While sticking to a single idea is not necessarily a bad thing, taking risks is necessary to discover what works best for me.
