We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Naomi Sky. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Naomi below.
Naomi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve ever worked on is my next single, which will be released on August 12th! The song is called, “Blue Skies,” and it explores anxiety. During my junior year in college, I started experiencing panic attacks for the first time in my life. It felt extremely scary, and I wasn’t sure how to share my feelings and experiences with my friends. Music has always been a safe space for me to reflect on my emotions, so I wrote a song about the situation.
There was a part of me that wanted to share my experiences with my friends. I wanted to open up and let the people who care about me in, but I was afraid of being judged or that people wouldn’t understand my emotions. Thankfully, I was able to open up and share my anxiety with my parents. However, even after I talked to my parents, I had trouble finding a way to start that conversation with my friends. This song feels so meaningful because it gives me a platform to talk about my previous experiences with anxiety and mental health. Everyone experiences different emotions at various times in their lives, and I hope sharing my experiences helps my audience. My dream for this song is that it gives people of various ages a way to start a conversation with their loved ones about anxiety or anything regarding their mental health. I hope this song can be a part of the movement that helps normalize conversations about mental health.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been singing since I was a little girl. When I was younger and I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always answered, “A singer and an artist”. I started taking voice lessons when I was 13, but before that, I sang as much as I could, especially around the house. When I was 10, I wrote my first song. It was about a boy I had a crush on in my class, and there was something I immediately loved about songwriting. I cherished the way I was able to safely express my emotions through writing music with lyrics. Today, self-expression continues to be one of my favorite parts of songwriting.
When I was 18, I decided to go to college for music because I couldn’t imagine doing anything else for the rest of my life. But while I was in college, I encountered a few challenges. I felt unsure about who I was as an artist. I started to doubt myself and my passion for music, and I ended up completely switching my major from music to communication studies. I had created great connections and relationships with some of my professors in the music school at my university, and everyone, especially two of my favorite music professors, encouraged me to follow my heart. Switching my major ended up being one of the best decisions I ever made. I learned a lot about the art of communication, and it ended up leading me back to pursuing and creating a career for myself as an artist. I feel like I gave myself space to learn more about who I am as an individual, a woman, a person. And while I was finishing up my college degree in communications, I continued writing and recording music with a close friend.
Even when I switched majors, I knew in my heart that I wanted to continue creating music and singing because that makes me happy. As I continued recording music for fun, I realized I was sharing my self-love journey and my growth through my lyrics. I feel like I became and continue to become more self-aware of my emotions by writing songs about them.
Fast forward a couple years to 2020, and I released my first single as Naomi Sky. I love the idea that music can help us to release and let go of emotions, accept emotions, and celebrate emotions/anything in life. My goal as an artist is to provide a space for people to do that: feel their emotions, accept them, release/let go of anything they want to, and celebrate who they are! I feel like every stage of life is different, and we all have unique journeys and destinations. One of the ways we can connect to each other is by sharing our emotions and experiences with the people we love. I hope my music inspires my audience to be themselves, to enjoy life, to work through any emotions they’re feeling and continue growing, to feel safe feeling their emotions and understand that emotions are one aspect of being human, to share their emotions and be vulnerable with the people they love and trust, and lastly, I hope my music fills individuals with hope for the future!
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Vulnerability and empowerment have been two themes in my life these past few years. I’ve learned how valuable it can be in any relationship to share my emotions and experiences with the people who love and care about me, while also creating space to listen to what’s going on in their lives. And I have also learned how important it is to speak up and feel empowered sharing my opinions and emotions while maintaining healthy boundaries with my friends and family.
One of my goals with my music is to encourage others to be vulnerable and recognize vulnerability as a strength. I felt so afraid of being judged by others for my emotions in the past, which really dissuaded me from being fully vulnerable with my friends. Now, I understand that when an individual really loves and cares about me, they want to know what I’m feeling and be there for me in any way they can. People who care about me want me to do what’s best for me. I feel empowered to share my emotions with my friends, family, and my boyfriend because I believe in the value of my feelings, I trust that my emotions can assist me in creating a happy life, and I know the people I love want the best for me and will always encourage me to follow my heart. I hope that the way I express myself in my songs also empowers others to feel comfortable sharing their emotions and opinions and using their voice.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part about being an artist is the connections I’ve created with other artists and creatives, and the self-awareness I’ve gained and continue to gain through creating. I love the joy that creativity adds to my life!
