We were lucky to catch up with Naomi Moeller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Naomi, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
In short, my mission is to show that every person is unique, we all have different struggles, and each person has an innate sense of value. Although I write to give visibility and spread awareness for people who mostly have disabilities, I want every person to be seen for who they are- which is an absolutely unique and beautiful soul!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those of you who may not know, my son, Lucas, was diagnosed with autism by age 4, and shortly after was diagnosed with ADHD. My son is absolutely wonderful and I wouldn’t change him, and I am so grateful to be his mom. When Lucas was 5, I had my daughter, Carly, and over the years I witnessed firsthand how amazing their relationship was! Over the years, I have seen Carly and Lucas form a bond unlike any other. I became a writer to help others know about the beautiful relationship that these two can have, in spite of what others might say about my son. Yes, he is different, but to Carly and our family, Lucas is her uniquely-made big brother whom she loves unconditionally.
My upcoming book, “My Brother, Lucas”, is due to be released over the next few months. I’m thrilled to share this children’s book because it really gives insight into my children’s wonderful relationship and may help others understand how differences aren’t negative things- they are simply the details that make people uniquely themselves! My book isn’t meant to give an educational account about the many intricacies of any disability. It is merely meant to show a loving sibling relationship between my two special kids.
I don’t really imagine being all too different than any other parent or writer in this industry. I’m just a mom who really loves my children and hopes to promote love and acceptance for all people- no matter their differences.
I’m most proud of the hard work that I’ve put into my writing. It has always been my dream to be an author, but I never knew what I would even want to write about. Now that I have found what I am most passionate about (my children), I worked through so many obstacles to even make this book a reality. In spite of the challenges of motherhood, various life struggles, medical emergencies, my work as an NCSP, and other complications, I have been able to finish my first published book! It is absolutely a dream come true!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is really to just give visibility and show support for so many people who are facing different challenges because of their differences. I promote people with all types of disabilities on my social media pages because I simply want them to be seen and loved!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I had my son, Lucas, I was a single mother. I never felt like I had the support that I wished I would have- especially when my son wasn’t behaving like his peers. When Lucas received the diagnosis of autism and ADHD, it felt overwhelming- to say the least. Having a child as a single mother is difficult, but having a child with disabilities felt like an unmanageable hurdle. I know there are many single parents out there trying to do their absolute best for their children and I was just another one of them. Every day had its own set of challenges- from finding the right care for my son, finding the right educational services, to figuring out what life needed to look like for us, it was ALL difficult! But, I kept going because I am just like so many parents out there who simply want their children to be fulfilled and happy. We press on because we love!
