We were lucky to catch up with Nanxi Jin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nanxi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
100% ! My greatest joy stems from finishing a creative project, showcasing it to the world, and receiving recognition and praise from people I’ve never met. This serves as a profound validation for me. However, concurrently, I also aspire to hold down a conventional job and immerse myself in the typical nine-to-five work and life routine. As an artist, I find that the most significant challenge lies in maintaining consistency. Factors such as inspiration, a stable work schedule, and a reliable income all play crucial roles in shaping my creative process.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I originally born in China and relocated to the United States at the age of 16. Ceramics has a rich history in my family, and I was born in Jingdezhen, known as the porcelain capital of China. Growing up in a family of ceramic artists in China, I was exposed to clay from a young age, making it a significant part of my artistic journey.
However, my interest in ceramics truly ignited during my sophomore year of college. It was during those years that I discovered my profound passion for this medium. The tactile nature of clay, its malleability and capacity for transformation, captivated me. It provided me with a means to bring my artistic visions to life in three-dimensional forms. This compelling experience led me to pursue an education in ceramics, as I desired to delve deeper into this art form and refine my skills in this creative discipline.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I will say is the impact on others. Art holds the power to evoke emotions, stimulate thoughtful reflection, and spark inspiration for change. I believe that as an artist, I can discover fulfillment by expressing my perspective through my creations, with the potential for my work to deeply affect and resonate with others.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Oh man there are so many things to do; Supporting local artists by purchasing their artwork or merchandise is unquestionably a great way to show your support. Encouraging artists to collaborate with the local community is also invaluable. Artists can actively engage in community-driven projects that tackle social issues and foster community cohesion. Additionally, financial assistance is extended to artists and creative organizations through grants, scholarships, and fellowships. These forms of support enable them to concentrate on their creative work without the perpetual financial strain.
