We were lucky to catch up with Nancy Mulemwa Siisii recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nancy Mulemwa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Integrating Service for Immigrants
I decided to provide integrating services to fellow immigrants because no one understands our stories than US. 20 years ago when I arrived in New York. The truth is, many of us arrive to a new destination feeling inspired to write our new chapter. As reality sets in we are challenged to navigate a new set of culture norms. Knowing it can be confusing, lonely and sometimes scary, our vision and focus is to help others integrate here in New York City. Our goal is to be along side individuals as the embark on their new journey. The Concrete Pastures team provides targeted wrap-around services based on the needs of each client, to fully support them successful integration.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born and raised in Zambia, Africa, but I later migrated to America and settled in New York where I’ve been living for 20 years. I have over 15 years of experience in the financial industry, currently working as a financial center manager. As a dreamer, I have and continue to have a passion for making substantive bonds with audiences, and helping to inspire people to reach for their dreams. Being an immigrant has been one of the most challenging and extraordinary experiences of my life. It inspired me to start my podcast “Concrete Pastures: An African Immigrant Story” as a platform to reach out to fellow immigrants and dreamers. My goal is to provide a platform for myself and others to share their stories as we deconstruct the world’s view of immigrant status, and unlock the joys, laughs, and bravery that being a dreamer brings about.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I have to say, I have learnt a lot through my business journey. One lesson I learnt in particular, is just because you believe in the service you are providing, it doesn’t mean everyone will be on board or have the buy in. It’s hard to build a business, no one tells you about sleepless nights, understanding the market place, cash flow and financial management.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
What has worked well for us has been word of mouth from our clientele. We provide great customer service as well as live up to what we promise our clients.
