We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nancy Lamb . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nancy below.
Hi Nancy , thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
When I developed green Horse organics, I was focusing on a natural fly spray to fill much-needed gap in the Equine world. I excitedly tried each natural fly spray on the market, and each one failed to impress, and did very little to deter flies for my horses. I worked diligently to find something that was all natural., and would also help with other skin problems, horses face in the summer. It took about six years of formulating and finally my multitasking fly spray was born! Total horse protection fly spray is the heart of the green horse brand. I originally plan to make the fly spray just for my personal horses and the equine rescue. I was working with at the time. After much encouragement from Horse friends , rescues and barefoot trimmers that were tired of the toxic fly sprays, I decided to take the plunge. I was still a little hesitant. I was going to be able to pull this off having two young boys at home and my first battle with breast cancer.
I went to my very first Equine affair and got green. Horse organics a booth to see what the reception would be to the Horse public. I met so many wonderful people that encouraged and inspired me with their own stories. I decided I had to make this work, giving up on my dream was no longer and option. I knew this was something I was born to do and intensely passionate about making it happen. I’ve always felt my breast cancer was from early childhood exposure to many chemicals commonly used farms including the chemical flyspray we used on our horses. I was hopeful this decision could make an impact on this very real problem. My journey began to help horse rescues and became intertwined with battling breast cancer along this road. Cowgirl strong is way more than just a saying!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Nancy Lamb, the founder of green Horse organic which was launched in 2010. I’ve been around my horses my entire life growing up on a cattle and grain ranch. Starting with my first mean little Shetland pony and and I never lost thanks to my parents supporting my dream. Those rescue ponies turned into my boys 4H showhorses for many years and now all are retired and enjoying the good life with me and my family in Iowa.
Starting around 2010,I have been working on a natural fly spray formulation for many years with the intent of using on my horses and the rescue horses at healing hearts where I volunteered. There has been a huge, demand in the market for natural equine products, but no natural fly spray has ever fit the bill. They are loaded with toxic chemicals and pesticides or just plain do not work.
The big store brands we’ve used in the past are profit first driven where green Horse organics has always been horse driven. Despite the cost, what is the best ingredients to put on our horses to not only solve the problem of pesky insects, but to multitask. Setting the bar higher. Using only the highest quality human grade botanicals and organic essential oils because our horses deserve it. Spaying pyrethrin, and toxic chemicals on our horses skin and in the air to inhale is not only damaging to them, but for us as a horse owners who do this on a daily basis summer after summer. I knew there had to be a better way so I set my mind to this task of making the most elite ingredient, hardest, working, and all around, performing product that I would proudly use on my horses and the rescue horses.
I only intended to make this on a small scale for myself in a few neighbors, but when the word spread the demand increase that I should bring this product public. Horse Shoer, vets, trainers. We’re tired of being subjected to the old-school toxic fly spray and we’re ready for something new with a true healthy spin made from the heart. And so it began..

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My dream to make natural super effective products for horses was nearly derailed by my breast cancer diagnosis in 2015, followed by a second cancer diagnosis two years later. With young boys at home and a lot on the line I didn’t know if I had the grit to push forward With my company. I had our first Iowa horse fair debut planned so I decided to forge on. Along this journey, I have met so many people that can relate to Battling cancer and all the unknowns it pours into your life. My story speaks to them and they know a passion for making horses and owners lives better is a worthy one. Many cancers are cumulative of the toxins and pesticides in your environment and growing up on a farm. It was full of them. Horses were always my go to when recovering from radiation and too many surgeries to count. I’m blessed to have them in my life and they truly help you heal.
I jokingly call myself the Luckiest Unlucky Cowgirl. As a 2time cancer thriver, I’m lucky to be here on the other side of the fight. I still pray and fight for many friends and will always look for the silver lining no matter what life throws my way. Keeping it gritty and Cowgirl Strong, saddle up even if the odds are stacked against you.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I guess I had to unlearn the idea the other people put into your head that you cannot turn your dream reality. Dreams are after all sold to us as pie in the sky or things that you reach for and never quite get. This is absolutely wrong, and I had to retrain my brain to think about it in a different way. I can do this, it might be an unconventional path but I want/have to make it happen!
my mama always told me to do what you know, figure a way to turn that knowledge into a business you are passionate about. I said but Mom, I know and I’m passionate about horses, and those are money pits!
It took a while, but eventually, I found my way.
So my advice is, don’t let anybody tell you that your dream isn’t worth it. After all it is your dream not theirs..
