Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nancy Kalsow. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nancy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I grew up on a family owned dairy farm and I share many of the things my parents did right in my book “Acres of Life – Lessons Learned on a Family Dairy Farm “. (https://www.amazon.com/Acres-Life-Lessons-Learned-Family/dp/1734214007). My parents provided space to learn, grow, and be my genuine self. I was so blessed to have a loving family. Love was felt often, but spoken rarely – bringing truth to the concept that actions speak louder than words.
“Some people walk into a room and say ‘here I am’ and others walk into a room and say ‘there you are!;” Ann Landers.
My Dad was a ‘There YOU are’ person. He saw each of his 8 children for who we were as individuals and loved our unique characteristics. His eyes lit up when I walked in the room and he would say just one word, “Nancy”, as if I was the only person who mattered. He greeted everyone that way. Names are important. People are important. You are important. I want everyone to FEEL that level of being seen and loved for who you are.
Nancy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was brought into this world as number 7 of 8 children of a catholic farm family in Wisconsin. Our farm was called Do-A-Dab because there was a whole lot of doing to be done. I learned, at an early age, the value of teamwork and the degree of accountability required to do a job well. My values are built on a foundation of responsibility, loyalty, trust, and love. After earning my degree in Child Care education I was invited to work for the company that two of my sisters were already employed at, with the hope of providing child care services as a benefit to employees. I ended up learning the business from the ground up and becoming the Chief Operations Officer overseeing the professional development of many team members. I became mesmerized by the unique qualities and characteristics each team member displayed and unknowingly created a culture of what I call “talent tapping”. I became known for bringing out the best in what people do by helping them discover who they really are and want to be.
When I changed companies I unfortunately experienced the exact opposite environment where judgement and fear paved the way for decisions and behaviors. I made a commitment to myself that I would never work in an environment like that again, nor did I want anyone else to. I launched Kalsow Coaching & Consulting, LLC in 2019 with the mission to “Inspire YOU to live in your WHO”.
I’ve designed The R.E.A.L. toolkit which provides resources for being real as an individual, team, and leader. The toolkit provides techniques and tactics to support you in Reflection, Engagement, Alignment, and Leading (yourself & others). I use these tools in all of my coaching packages and as part of my proprietary Unleash Your Inner Leader development experience. I’m currently writing several books that will be part of The R.E.A.L. Series.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Patience and Acceptance. Allowing each individual to discover themself, to tune into their uniqueness, honor it and learn to use it to live their best life – NOT what others think it should be.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Know and believe that there IS an I in Team. Guide each team to manage themselves using these 3 key principles:
* Know that you are each uniquely different – define and leverage individual strengths
* Know that you are each ordinarily the same – you all want to be seen, heard, understood, valued, and respected.
* Honor and nurture both of the above.
When all members of a team understand this they can engage, debate, challenge, and unite to achieve any agreed upon and desired result.
