We recently connected with Nancy Janes and have shared our conversation below.
Nancy , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I started Romania Animal Rescue following a devastating visit to the country. Animal suffering, abandonment, neglect was everywhere. The government was poisoning the dogs for animal control.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Romania Animal Rescue provides vital spay/neuter to humanely stop the suffering, abandonment and abuse before it can start. We’re approaching 145,000 spays and neuters.
We also run the Homeless Animals Hospital program that treats the neediest of animals. Animals from the streets, yards, factories, impoverished owners, rescuers and shelters.
We also run the Veterinary Training Program to teach more vets on highly skilled veterinary surgical techniques. We run education programs and field trips to our headquarters at Center of Hope near Bucharest.
RAR provides food for dogs and cats at a shelter with 400+ animals.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I learned that you need to be careful about who you work with. Shelters can be very corrupt and often don’t want to solve the overpopulation crisis as displaying suffering animals on social media gets the money flowing.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Yes. Having been cheated by a con artist who used her shelter animals to make money. I didn’t quit. I was more determined than ever to change the lives of the poor animals. I found the right people and moved to working directly with vets, helped to build a hospital called Center of Hope in Romania that is now probably the finest in Eastern Europe. Don’t give up. That’s what cheaters are counting on….that you will be embarrassed and go away. Don’t let them win.
