We recently connected with Nancy Hu and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nancy, thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I think being able to make things and create meanings is such a privilege. I sometimes would wonder what other jobs I would do if I were not a designer, but ultimately I don’t think it’d be a drastically different life. Creativity and art will still be there in everyday life.
Nancy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a curious graphic designer who loves to explore new things and experiment with different approaches. My work mainly focuses on branding and identity design, with expertise in visual and typographic systems, environmental design, editorial design, and illustrations. My strength lies in crafting visual narratives through colors and compositions. While off work, I’m a major print lover, especially risograph! It is something I hope to further develop and work on more.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
That will be the story of getting my first internship here in New York. As an international student who was then still struggling with language barriers and cultural differences, I was determined to gain more experience during my time here. I encountered a creative artist who runs her own studio. She does a lot of custom design and art installations for all kinds of spaces, which to me is a dream job! I was very persistent in asking for an internship opportunity even though she was not actively hiring. I ended up wearing her down and got to work with her as her assistant! It might be small but it was a precious experience for me.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
This is something I ask myself a lot too. Do I have a goal? What is it that I want to accomplish? What is the purpose of my pursuit? The more I think about it, the simpler the answer gets, which is to enrich life, both mine and others. The satisfaction I feel when clients compliment my work, the excitement people feel when they see something they adore…those are the moments I am for. Creating more and more of those moments will be my goal.
