We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nancy DeFilippis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nancy below.
Hi Nancy, thanks for joining us today. Too often the media represents innovation as something magical that only high-flying tech billionaires and upstarts engage in – but the truth is almost every business owner has to regularly innovate in small and big ways in order for their businesses to survive and thrive. Can you share a story that highlights something innovative you’ve done over the course of your career?
Photography and the art of photography has come a long way. The innovation of capturing the moment of time has such a new meaning than 30 years ago. What’s the most innovative thing I have done in this career, is making sure my customers come first and making sure my photos will bring them happiness for years to come. This might not sound innovative, but in a time when everyone is rushing to get things done and moving onto the next, I make sure that a client who is entrusting me with their future memories are being paid attention to and receiving exactly what they want and delivering my quality of work which will always stand behind my name.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
In a very competitive business-like photography, everyone who purchases a $6,000 camera thinks they are a photographer. Truth be said it’s not always the camera. Yes, you need a terrific camera that will withstand different atmospheres and situations when you are shooting, but the key to a great photograph is the photographer. It’s the creative vision and what you see which others will never see behind the lens. I have been doing photography for over 30 years. Started with my Nikon click and shoot and over the years the technology guided me to do more which I could not do with the standard camera – and my creativity for capturing the moment grew as well. What started out with taking pictures of my family and pets grew into capturing so many important moments for my clients, from weddings, special celebrations, engagements, modeling shoots and more. The best thing is -this is not a job; this is a passion. If you are doing photography for the money, then you are in the wrong business-you must embrace the passion of loving that you are able to capture a moment of time that you might not ever capture again. You are creating memories for people who will in years from now look at that photo and remember that exact moment.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started my Instagram 4 years ago and have grown to over 4000 followers in that time. (Lenzqween16). The key to social media is do not put too much too often and always engage with the audience. It’s not just about your page, it’s about going to their page, liking their pictures or videos and engaging in a conversation with them. I did take some advertising ads to promote who I am, but most of my followers and success has been organic. People like people who respond, people like people who are real. I have never been a follower of the trends. If it works for me, I will make it work. I am not saying you should not follow a trend; I am saying understand it and make it your own. I think that is why I have been succeeding, but always staying humble knowing how much work I have to do to achieve that goal.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resilience is a strong word. It’s about never giving up even when things don’t work, the way you need them to. When Covid hit our world stopped and that was a horrible time for us all, but virtually what I was able to do for my clients I did. We started the path of communication, setting goals because we knew this will be behind us and we can continue with our daily lives in months to come. So, we took the time to understand and set goals. Once Covid was lifted it was full force to executing what we spoke about and the satisfaction of seeing all the planning come to life was amazing.
