We recently connected with Nami Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Nami, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Vegan Babe is a lifestyle brand for people who want to advocate for animals while wearing stylish, high-quality products that make you feel your best self. However, the mission and impact is what is most essential for us. We are an impact over profit company. Our goal is to plant the seed in people about living a vegan lifestyle. Our merch has catchy and witty sayings on them that make anyone turn their head, laugh, or our ultimate goal, spark a conversation.
The brand originated from a batch of 20 “Vegan Babe” T-shirts sold at a vegan restaurant in South Beach, Miami, and has now transformed into a globally recognized lifestyle brand. By wearing Vegan Babe apparel, individuals not only express their values but also raise awareness and initiate discussions about veganism.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Nami; I was born and raised in a small town in Nebraska. I went vegetarian eight years ago and went vegan shortly after. Ironically, I grew up on a farm where I was helping my dad feed cattle and load them into the semi to send to the slaughterhouses. After graduating from College, I moved to Miami, where “Vegan Babe” came to life.
We have a range of products from crop tops, hoodies, beanies, biker shorts, and more! Our most popular design is the “vegan women taste better,” with “dairy free, b*tches” coming in a close second. You can check out our merch online at www.veganbabemiami.com or catch us around vegan pop-up markets in Los Angeles. Follow us on Instagram @veganbabemiami to keep up with where we may pop up next!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe being authentic has genuinely helped me build Vegan Babe. Every product, post, event, etc., I post or create has been 100% touched by me. I am lucky to have a graphic design background, so I can be very hands-on with my social media page, website, and merch design.
When I went vegan eight years ago, I lacked the sense of a vegan community, so instead, I created one! My goal was to make Vegan Babe a place where vegans can feel proud, heard, and connect with like-minded individuals. This brand is truly a reflection of the person I am, and people can see that through the brand.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I know every creative or artist can relate when I say the journey has a lot of up and downs and also that the creative journey never ends! Sometimes you have to wait for those creative sparks to come up before you make something. Personally, I feel as if my most vulnerable self creates the best art, and I think there’s something beautiful in that.
